My goal for my Traveling Teaching Totes (T.T.T) program, is to be able to involve students and parents in their home, with a variety of tools that will reach the different learners- whether they are learners that just need enrichment, or learners that need extra support. Each T.T.T is a tote bag that contains directions, various reading material from books, poems and/or songs, along with hands-on activities, manipulatives and/or games. Each T.T.T. will focus on the particular area of study (examples: fractions, multiplication...). Despite each bag centering on one main subject area, each bag will be cross-curricular. Parents love to be involved in their child's academics but with work schedules, are unable to do so as much as they'd like to. With this program, not only will the children be able to experience academic engagement, but they'll be able to do so at home, bringing together the home-to-school connection.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

Thank you to the LSuncoast Credit Union for funding my Traveling Teaching Totes grant. I was able to create 7 more totes to meet math standards: area and perimeter, perimeter of composite figures, fractions, division, place value, multiplicaiton, and multiplication & division. Thank you for enabling my students to be able to chekc out a tote in an area that they want to improve in, or explore, that is on grade level for 3rd grade.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

My Traveling Teaching Tote program has been occurring since 2011, when the Education Foundation gave me a grant to get it started. I have 29 totes already. The children have explored the contents in the classroom, in small groups with volunteers, and have had the pleasure to check them out and take them home. Parents are thrilled with the program. Most of my totes are for first and second grade and now that I am in third grade, I would like to create new mathematics totes that are at the level of the children I have. The children will be able read literature with the mathematics theme of each tote. There will be academic games to explore, as well as hands-on activities to immerse themselves in the academic content. Afterwards, the parent and child will be able to write about their experience in a journal. All of this, plus directions, will be included inside each tote. Some of the new tote ideas are: multiplication, division, multiplication and division, fractions, perimeter and area, and place value.

Benefits to my students

There are many “critical issues” regarding education. Two of which that I consider high ranking are what I base most of my philosophy of education around. To achieve a successful education for each child, I feel that all teachers have to take into consideration two aspects that I deem very important: every child is a different learner, and that children need educational support outside of the classroom. My Traveling Teaching Tote program does exactly that. It benefits children at all academic levels by focusing on the content they are expected to learn in third grade, by including various activities to reach all learners, and by giving the parents a platform to assist them.
