Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 804

A total of 804 students in grades Kindergarten through grade 5 the Art Builds Community mural project. Students in each grade level participated in the creation of a class mural. The murals were painted on large 3’ x 4’ canvases. The theme of the mural was selected and then each child assisted in painting a component of the mural. The murals took several weeks to finish, so each week the students were interested to see what had been done on their grade level mural. Student were also interested in the murals of the other grade levels.

The outcomes included the collaborate creation of the mural, children worked together by adding a component to the mural that went with the images that were already painted. Another outcome was the opportunity for the students to work with acrylic paints on a large format painting, this had not been done here in the past, so for many it was a first time experience. An additional outcome was the sense of community that developed through the creation of the murals. The children were interested in the mural that was done by their grade level as well as the murals that were created by others.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will build a sense of community with their grade level peers through the creation of a mural. Every grade K-5 will create one grade level mural. Each student will contribute to the creation of the group mural by painting a section and contributing one aspect to the finished piece. The murals will be displayed in the school.

What will be done with my students

Students will look at artworks by famous artists and discuss how these works can influence the group project. Students will sketch out the concept for the mural on a 4’ x 5’ canvas. Students will begin to paint the background of the canvas so that each student participates in this aspect of the mural. Last, the children will create a small individual component to be incorporated into the finished mural.

Benefits to my students

Building community in a school and individual grade levels is important to students because it establishes a feeling of security, a sense of identity and pride. As the students work collaboratively on their grade level murals they will learn to work as teams and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Budget Narrative

The grant will fund the purchase of two 12 color sets of pint bottles of acrylic paints for the children to use in their painting of the murals. The paints would be purchased from a school supply company. The grant will also fund the purchase of the six (6) canvases, one for each grade level (K-5). The canvases would be purchased from a local arts and crafts store, the price would be $50 each. Sales tax would be about $18.00.
