Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 450

I was so thrilled to receive this grant!  Unfortunately, the original printer package I had planned on purchasing was no longer available when the grant was fulfilled, so I did some research to find another reliable system.  After reading many reviews and speaking to colleagues at other schools, I decided on the Makerbot system.

3D printing is very new to my students.  We have only had the printer for about a month, and the children are fascinated!  So far we have only printed objects by downloading the printer files from Thingiverse ( http://www.thingiverse.com/ ).

Next year I will work with the students to start creating their own files in Scratch and also introducing the printer to the teachers so they can incorporate its capabilities into their lessons.

You can see the printer in action creating one of our first prints!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To bring my 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students' imagination to life and excite them about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning. I want my students to realize that learning is fun, and help them get experience with this new and fast developing technology!

What will be done with my students

3D Printing empowers students to embrace innovative technology and allows them to reach new levels of thinking.
They will need to work collaboratively to brainstorm ideas for their creation and then problem solve together to create an electronic version of their idea in 3D modeling program.
Then ultimately their completed design will come to life using the 3D printer!

I will allow the students to create a 3D figurine that they will then use to film a stop animation that they script.

You can see an example here: http://tinyurl.com/z2rf95v

Some examples of other ways students can use a 3D printer are:
Print out historical artifacts for closer examination
Print out 3D versions of their artwork
Print out topography maps of geographic areas
Print parts of a skeleton that can be assembled as a whole
Imagine and create new animals (example a cross between a zebra and cat)
Make any students’ creative ideas and designs come to life!

Benefits to my students

When children use 3D printers, they have a mindset for better learning, one where it was okay to make mistakes. This contributes to their boldness for design, increasing their confidence and imagination. Our world changes at such a rapid pace, more than it has in the past. Being able to learn from their mistakes will be invaluable going into their futures, where the jobs that they will do, don’t even exist today.

3D printing in classrooms is a good way for young inventors to learn the principles of design. The technology has the potential to help students think of new ways to enhance the way that humans interface with the world.
