Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

This year our class was able to begin "Genius hour" projects thanks to the funds from this grant.  The purchase of books guidee me as the teacher to help students discover their passions and research a topic of their choosing.  The books will continue to impact students for many years to come.  The puzzles and manipulatives were materials that developed problem solving techniques, critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills. We will also be able to continue to use these and add to our collection over the years to come.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To develop free and open debating skills, critical and investigative thinking, and informed and disciplined reasoning.
To actively participate in the AICE Thinking Skills course and successful completion of the required examinations, as well as to supplement student success in their other subjects with an improved ability to understand, analyze and resolve problems.
This elective course counts as six college credits and has tripled in size in enrollment this year.

What will be done with my students

Under the auspices of the University of Cambridge International AS Level Thinking Skills Curriculum students will complete a variety of problem solving and critical analysis tasks and projects.
Students will develop problem solving strategies; logical approaches to thinking; metacognition; and analysis and construction of arguments by completing a wide variety of activities that support independent and critical thought for individual activities and group projects.
This program is designed to support learners in becoming:
• confident in working with information and ideas – their own and those of others
• responsible for themselves, responsive to and respectful of others
• reflective as learners, developing their ability to learn
• innovative and equipped for new and future challenges
• engaged intellectually and socially, ready to make a difference.
Students will:
** solve problems related to all areas of the HS curriculum
** create problems for each other to solve
** critically analyze newspaper articles, speeches, debates for facts and fallacies in logical reasoning
** create their own reasoned arguments for discussion

Benefits to my students

Students will develop 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity, as well as developing content knowledge and strategies for learning.
The skills that students use and develop in this class will help them be successful in other classes, as well as college and career trajectories. Every student and every person benefits from having great problem solving and critical thinking skills. Our future graduates do not need to know "things" as much as they need to know "strategies" and this class will stretch their capacities to think, problem solve, and persist in challenging situations.
Students in this class will have the opportunity to be engaged in hands-on learning, with student choice to direct their passion projects, and explore and develop their true potential in a number of areas to help them explore their post-high school goals.

Budget Narrative

The resource books will provide a reference library for both teacher and students. This can continue to be developed and provide cross-curricular resources for the whole school. The puzzles and manipulatives will be re-used each year and the consumables will start this project off and be replenished as necessary by donations or contributions from other sources.
