Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 24

This classroom grant was used to provide Honors Biology students with materials needed to create a 3D model of a plant, animal or bacterial cell of their choice. Through this hands on activity, students explored the structure and function of plant, animal and prokaryotic cells. Students were also able to compare and contrast the the varying cell models. All students were actively engaged in the unit and able to retain plant stucture knowledge. On behalf of my Honors Biology students, I would like to thank Suncoast Credit Union and the donors for providing the fund needed for this hands on exploration activity.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

This project is for 9th/10th grade Honors Biology students at Immokalee High School during their cell structure unit. The overall goal of this grant to obtain the necessary funds to purchase supplies for students to create 3D models of an animal, plant or bacterial cell of their choice.

What will be done with my students

Working in cooperative groups of 3-4, students will be asked to research different types of cells, paying particular attention to cell composition and structure. Based off of their research findings, they will then create a 3D model of an animal, plant or bacterial cell of their choice. In their cell model, students will be asked to include all necessary organelles covered in class that are present in their chosen cells. Their cell of choice must also have a particular function and they will be required to include organelles/structures related to that function. For example, students may choose to create a model of an epithelial cell of the small intestines with microvilli or a sperm cell with flagella. Once cell models are complete, students will present their models to the class and relate the cell structure to its function. This in-class project will take approximately 3 class periods to complete.

Benefits to my students

This in-class project provides an interactive approach for students to strengthen and apply their knowledge of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell structure by creating 3D cell models. Giving students the opportunity to research and chose their own cell in which to model facilitates student inquiry and actively engages students in the classroom. This project will assist students with their ability to:
1. Compare and contrast the structures found in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
2. Compare and contrast the structures found in plant cells and in animal cells.
3. Describe how structures in cells are directly related to their function within the cell.

Budget Narrative

The above budget includes all necessary materials needed to complete the project. Styrofoam balls and sheets will be used to create the base of the cells, modeling clay and foam sheets will be used for organelles. Paint will be used to provide contrast to identify organelles. These materials will be used for an honor biology class of approximately 30 students.
