My goal through the use of the Lego Education We Do 2.0 product is to ignite my students natural desire to explore and discover. It is a hands-on, digital opportunity to strengthen their understanding of the eight science and engineering practices, including asking questions and solving problems, modeling, prototyping, investigation, analyzing and interpreting data, computational thinking, creating evidence based arguments, and obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information.
Just as important, I want to create a unique classroom environment amongst students of different learning abilities. I want to foster collaboration and encourage self-guided learning by creating enthusiasm and giving students the tools they need to overcome challenges.
Students are guided through 16 real-world, standards based science projects. Every projects includes the use of technology, coding, scientific method, engineering, and collaboration. They are given the chance to explore rain forests through frog metamorphosis, investigate the effects of hazardous weather-related events, and discover Mars by creating a rover. Additional featured projects include: investigating an earthquake resistant LEGO structure, designing an automatic floodgate LEGO prototype to control water, creating a LEGO device that sorts physical properties of objects to be recycled, designing a LEGO weather alarm device to reduce the impact of severe weather, and designing a LEGO prototype to allow endangered species to safely cross a road.
The demand for integrating 21-st century skills in elementary education is great. I would permanently integrate this program into my curriculum for years to come.
"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn."
I teach an ESE inclusion class with 1/3 of my student population possessing identified learning disabilities, life- threatening health impairments, social and emotional disabilities, and language and visual impairments. The LEGO product is naturally engaging and relevant to the age group that I teach. LEGOs are developmentally appropriate for students with or without learning difficulties. Abstract concepts are made concrete by using tangible elements and students are forced to collaborate. It is through this active and engaged experience that I hope to lay the foundation for 21-st century skills and lifelong learning.
Besides, who doesn't love LEGOs?
The WeDo ReadyGo 16-Student Pack provides 8 kits. Students work in groups of 2 or 3 per one kit. The software involved is available to be downloaded with no charge.
