Coding teaches logic skills and problem solving, and it helps kids succeed in an increasingly digital world. Osmo Coding is the easiest way to introduce coding to our 3-5th grade students. I want to use this new set in my Media Center Makerspaces.
The media center currently has 2 OSMO systems. I would like to add a third with the coding set. I have put the ipad for the system in a separate grant to make it more affordable to the masses. If I do not get both grants fulfilled then I will use my personal ipad to run the station.
The systems are set up in the media center's Makerspaces. Makerspaces are areas that allow students to learn creatively, collaboratively and independently through exploration.
With Osmo Coding, multiple kids can play together on the same iPad. There’s enough room on the table for two or more kids to assemble sequences and play together.
Everybody should learn how to program a computer, because it teaches you how to think.
— Steve Jobs
The coding set is created by a team from TIDAL Lab at Northwestern University, Osmo Coding is inspired by over 50 years of research into computer programming education. The game is appropriate for ages 5–12 and keeps kids engaged for endless hours.
Osmo Curriculums are available for free for educators. They can download the Teacher’s Guide and choose from over 60 lesson plans, hand-crafted for Osmo. So there is always something new! The Osmo is a tool that can be used over and over again for years to come, so this grant will benefit much more than 200 students.
The coding set includes all the coding magnets and the coding app. The base and mirror will work with this set and also any other set that we already own. It can be used year after year, so this grant will serve many more students than the 450 I listed.
