Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 35

The benefits of this grant are endless!  First, the students’ vocabulary increased dramatically as they read and discussed the text. Next, their reading skills improved by being instructed to acquire the meaning from the different types of stories. We highlighted and underlined together, so the students learned to find and understand the critical information. They learned to distinguish between relevant information and irrelevant information. This process taught them to answer the question completely since they learned to respond and include only the necessary evidence. I believe that the students are confident readers, now.  As they became better readers, they increased the time they spent reading. This increased their vocabulary, improved their writing, strengthened their reading abilities and became even better students. What wonderful benefits! These Read and Respond Using Evidence Card Banks will be used repeatedly in years to come, so hundreds of students will benefit from this grant.  Thank you so much for making these learning opportunities possible!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to boost the students’ verbal skills and reading comprehension. With online and print materials, students will be more engaged as they learn new vocabulary and new strategies to understand what they are reading. It will also help students build 21st century skills as we utilize iPads, computers, and the mimeo.

What will be done with my students

The students will respond to high-interest fiction and nonfiction passages. They will read the passage and respond to the question using evidence to support their responses. Each question will promote deeper comprehension by asking the students to refer explicitly to the text, recount key details, and explain the main ideas! There are 60 literature and informational text cards for each grade level so the choices are varied.
The students will also have access to digital versions of the activity cards! The interactive tools allow the students to highlight key concepts and details. They will underline and annotate important passages and the various text features. The students will type directly into text boxes which will promote digital literacy as they respond to the text. This can be saved, downloaded or printed. I will be able to use the digital content for instruction by projecting it onto the whiteboard so everyone can see it. Then I will model each reading strategy for my students. With the modeling and guided practice, the students will become stronger and more confident readers. I believe their test scores will increase as well, due to the fact that their tests will be on a computer. This will be a perfect fit!

Benefits to my students

The benefits of this grant are endless! First of all, I believe the students’ vocabulary will increase dramatically as they read and discuss the text. Next, their reading skills will improve since I will be explaining and instructing how to get the meaning from the different stories. As we highlight and underline together, the students will truly learn how to find and understand the critical information. They will learn how to distinguish between important information and irrelevant information. Another important lesson will be answering the question completely, as the students learn how to respond and include necessary evidence. An additional benefit will be that the students will become more confident readers. As they become better and more confident readers! They will read more which will increase their vocabulary, improve their writing, strengthen their reading abilities and become better students. What wonderful benefits!
