Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 37

The students gained deeper knowlege of numbers and number sense as they manipulated the rekenreks to work out story problems and equations. They loved the hands-on approach and their math scores increased. They were able to manipuate the beads and have a better understnading of numbers to 20 and base ten.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To help first grade students develop a deep understanding of number sense in a fun and engaging way using Reknreks. This will allow them to apply counting, addition and subtraction skills using 10 frames which will develop and strengthen their number sense,

What will be done with my students

The students will use individual Reknreks to manipulate numbers during number talks. Number Talks are an important part of the math curriculum for Collier County Public Schools and cover several important kindergarten math standards. On a daily basis students will use the Reknreks which are 10 frames with movable beads to deepen their understanding of number combinations up to 20. This will allow them to build a strong mathematical foundation as each child will show her thinking while displaying mathematical combinations. Reknreks allow for many different correct answers and students can work together to show their understanding and application of math concepts and skills needed to meet Florida math standards.

Benefits to my students

I will be able to monitor students understanding and growth in number sense on a daily basis. Each child will show their thinking on the individual Reknrek. This will allow me to provide extensions or reteaching for students based on their progress. The use of Reknreks can be shared with the other teachers on my team to benefit all students in Kindergarten.

Budget Narrative

The funds will provide a class set of Reknreks with teacher display for individual use in classroom. This allows each child a chance to demonstrate their understanding of number sense to 20.
