Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 30

This generous grant was the seed to start the student-run IHS Tech Repair lunchtime business at Immokalee High School.  Funds were used purchase tools and replacement parts to fix broken phones that students brought in.  By watching YouTube videos, IT Academy students learned how to perform repairs on iphones and other devices.  In the first month of business, students have repaired over 30 devices - mostly iphones.  Thank you Patrick and Katie Crabtree for funding this classroom grant!  Not only are IT Academy students learning valuable technical skills, they are providing a valuable service to the students at our school.  By charging only for the cost of the replacement parts, students with broken phones save 50% to 80% of the cost of taking their phones to Apple or other vendors to get them fixed.  Now that the word is out about what IHS Tech Repair can do, we expect to fix hundreds of phones over the rest of the school year.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Teach IT Academy students skill of repairing cracked mobile phone screens

What will be done with my students

Initial funding will be the seed to start an IT Academy student-run business of repairing broken phone screens. I am constantly amazed at the number of students (and adults) whose phone screens are badly damaged. Apple charges $99 to repair a screen. Replacement screens can be purchased for around $15 but special tools and skills are required to successfully make the repairs. Funding request is for a screen repair kit and 10 replacement screens. Students will run a small school business to learn how to make the repairs for the makes and models of phones of their customers.

Benefits to my students

IT Academy students learn a valuable skill of mobile phone screen repair. Customers receive the benefit of having their phone repaired at a cost 80% lower than retail cost. Students learn the challenges of running a small business enterprise.
