Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 297

The Champions for Learning grant was spent on the CPO equipment detailed in the invoice.  The grant has allowed us to integrate inquiry into how the motion sections of the physical science course is taught.  The results of this transformation is a greater focus upon mathematics, the application of the scientific method to spontaneous inquiry, and scrutiny of hypothesis through experimentation and data collection.  The equipment funded by the grant affords students the opportunity to change variables such as incline, slope of angle, material of track, and mass.  The infrared sensors ensure that precise data is collected.  Using this equipment and the practical skill of measurement of the distance by ruler affords for a reasonable determination of speed as is required under Florida’s science standards.   Though the equipment looks like toys it should be stressed that these are precise machines, that are durable, and will allow us to continue advancing the curriculum for generations of students.  Next year we intend to look at how we can further refine the student learning experiences that start from the CPO premade investigations and end in experiences more tightly aligned with the Florida curriculum, the district’s stated scope and sequence, and finally the dependency of science on mathematics.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant request is to make the concepts of motion physics more easily attainable for children that struggle and are very resistant to subjects containing mathematics.

What will be done with my students

If this grant is funded children will be introduced to a hands on methodology of exploring motion physics as developed by the Cambridge Physics Organization (CPO). This grant will put in the hands of children precision tools that are especially designed to look like toys. These tools are durable capable of surviving impacts such as being dropped and intentional impacts from collisions set up when exploring concepts such as momentum. The tools are even robust enough to allow students to create explorations and experiments of their own.

If the grant is funded stations will be set up that will allow students to collect data in real time, analyze the behavior of moving objects, and predict the behavior of objects in further extremes of motion. The equipment will reinforce what students learn in the classroom. The individual modules are focused upon bringing to the students experiences that draw direct connections between the written concept and the underpinnings of the mathematical concepts given to us by Sir Isaac Newton. Finally the data collectors requested are compatible with existing Vernier technology including probes that do not have direct application to the physics curriculum. As an added benefit the data collectors are also created to be more user friendly then the lab quest technology and thus are easier for both the students and the teachers to use.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of the investment of funding into this technology is that it allows students to experience the concepts contained in the reading. Additionally funding this grant will allow students to experience the connection between the manipulation of variables and the predicted effect contained in the mathematical equations as a direct result of the laws of motion. Funding this project is an investment into the future of the children of Immokalee. The motion equipment set is durable enough to be repeatedly used year after year and none of it is perishable. Thus this one time investment will bring lasting value to both the community and the county. The final benefit of choosing to fund this grant is that the author of this grant is already experienced in the implementation of the equipment into the classroom and has had training directly from CPO in the operation and upkeep of the requested equipment. This experience eliminates the risk of an unforeseen circumstances preventing the children from benefiting from the grant that is being awarded.
