Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 75

The students have been able identify standard English conventions, literary devices and figurative languages through music and rhyme. They enjoy litening to the rap songs, memorizing them, and them using the lyrics as a resource during application of skills learned. Even as high school students, they sing along and even ask for the songs and videos to be repeated. The students are truly enjoying this resource and will continue having access to it thanks to this grant!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to actively engage students using rhythm and rhyme. Through the use of educational raps and songs, students will be able to learn academic vocabulary as well deepen language fluency. Flocabulary is an online program with hundreds of academic music videos that present English Language Arts concepts in a way that is pleasing to students while reaching learning targets.

What will be done with my students

Various topics will be introduced using the videos on Flocabulary. These videos provide students with both visual and aural exposure of that topic. After watching the video, students will participate in a variety of activities found on the Flocabulary website that will reinforce the topic presented. For instance, students will be asked to read and respond questions relating to the lyrics, fill in the blanks, and even take a formative assessment that will allow me to check for understanding.

Benefits to my students

Students in Intensive Reading are lacking the enthusiasm that leads to literacy. It is my belief that by combining modern music beats and advanced vocabulary and literary concepts, these students will find a place for literature in their lives.

I would use this program in all of my courses, therefore impacting over 70 students that are in dire need of motivation. Almost 30 of my students are English Language Learners that can also benefit from the fluency skills and upper level vocabulary presented in these songs and videos.
