Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 38

Thanks to our wonderful donor we were able to purchase a license for Spelling City for two third grade classes here at Poinciana Elementary School.  Our students loved working on Spelling City!  Many enjoyed using it for nightly homework due to the fun and engaging games offered.  We as teachers loved it because the games included vocabulary practice and sentence writing.  The vocabulary practice is so important to our students as we have a high ELL population at Poinciana.

At the start of the fourth quarter we started to actually have the students take their spelling test on spelling city.  The benefits to this were many including the ability for the student to have the words repeated as many times as needed, the freedom to work at their own pace, practice with keyboarding, and finally the tests graded for the teachers.  I surveyed my students to find out what they enjoyed about taking the test online and Ashley said, “IT makes the test more fun and the computer repeats the word as many times as you want.”  She also found it helpful that the computer gave you the definition.  As teachers we used the data gathered to reassign words that they students had difficulty with and give them extra practice games to really master both the spelling and the definitions.  Many thanks to our donors for giving us access to a program that our kids loved and learned from!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to have students interact with their spelling in an engaging format that holds their interest and integrates technology.

What will be done with my students

Students will have access to a program called Spelling City which allows the teacher to upload their spelling lists and assign pretests, engaging activities, word sorts by spelling patterns and vocabulary building activities. The program will be used in the classroom and also be available for students to use at home.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of using Spelling City are increased engagement, phonics and vocabulary enhancement and differentiated assignments. Increased accuracy of spelling will help students decode words and strengthen their writing skills.

Budget Narrative
