The goal is for students to recognize that math is all around us and to give support to my struggling mathematicians. The students will use technology and real world experiences collaboratively through the use of tablets to achieve success with stem activities, flipped centers, and practice skills & strategies required to be successful in math. These tablets are greatly needed to be able to access educational apps that will engage them into authentic tasks that correlate with the classroom curriculum and real world situations. They not only support learning, but also supplement and assist learning for those students that may need extra help as well as challenge my higher level students to help them achieve their maximum potential. Technology is an optimal way to reach those introverted students that gravitate towards learning through various media styles and gives our digital natives the tools they need to be successful in school.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 148

My Students students used these tablets during Stem activities where they had to research Stem careers and use them to create visual model designs in association with biomedical engineering. They were able to see the connection between science and math Also, these tablets helped my students increase their knowledge of math concepts by 40% and were able to use apps such as USATestprep, Mathisfun, and Brainpop that are interactive and correlated with the common core curriculum. These apps gave them model lessons followed by practice and I was able to integrate the use of these tablets into my centers where as of late has been technology deficient. Through observance I see my students more at ease with their learning and motivated to learn with the confidence in there ability to be successful in Math.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Tablets will be used in small group centers that target specific learning gaps or extensions as well provide an opportunity to be a connection to focus on activities related to FSA, Real World Math, and Stem models.
** Students will examine specific websites, apps, and video lessons based on their pre-diagnosed needs then complete mini-assessment to track progress and understanding. Many apps/websites can be integrated into the lesson plans that support hypothesis questioning and practice for required state testing.
**These tablets will also be vital tool in the flipped center model. Students will view a video of a math concept that will be taught the proceeding day to give students the opportunity to have consistent review and clarification of the 6th grade curriculum. Especially useful for those students that do not have internet in their home to participate in the flipped classroom model.
** Students will use apps that support the STEM model of learning that will lend itself to a future whole group STEM activity. STEM careers will also be researched within the STEM focus such as http://www.mastersindatascience.org/blog/the-ultimate-stem-guide-for-kids-239-cool-sites-about-science-technology-engineering-and-math/.

Benefits to my students

• Using Tablets enhances learning through variety and challenge, increases motivation and raises student engagement.
• Students have an opportunity to use resources that are linked with FSA and will be able use technology to access information and practice essential skills needed to master for the state test such as hypothesis questioning and practice.
• Students have an opportunity to use resources that are linked with Real World practices such as stock trading and budgeting,
• Students will be able to explore careers and focus on skills that are required in Stem Models. This is a component of my real world math center within the math curriculum.
• They will be able to use the device programmed for the flipped center model in order to be prepared for the following day’s review.
• Provides Peer support and learning by accessing programs through a collaboration process and through technology that provides a support system for all levels of learners that is relevant, meaningful, and honest in a way that helps those shy students whom have a hard time participating in group activities.
