The goal of the project is to be able to provide students with engaging songs and videos that use a multisensory approach of music, rhythm and rhyme that help stimulate learning of grade level standards. My hope is to ensure that my students are exposed to and internalize as much informational text as possible that supports the interdisciplinary literacy practice. As a teacher, it will not only help support my instruction through easy introduction to complex concepts, bring enrichment elements to lesson, and most importantly differentiate instruction for all learners.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 92

Having access to and using Flocabulary in the classroom as an engaging piece of instruction has helped to improve student motivation, sustain attention, and help solidify the many concepts that are covered throughout the year in all subject areas including life skills! The difference it has made has been overwhelming pleasing to see. With its well-written catchy songs that introduce and explain complex concepts it has positively impacted our students learning, as well as, educational experience. This is evident in the fact that students apply the strategies taught through the music and songs from Flocabulary in their own weekly learning assignments.

When Flocabulary is posted on your agenda as a start to our lesson students are instantly eager about it, which increases productivity. It has also been beneficial for our kinesthetic learners who need to be up and moving their bodies, because this resource has helped us be able to provide our students with additional opportunities to create motions and movements with the music in an appropriate setting. The responds from our students have been tremendously positive. Having the ability to use the related activities from the site provides us (the teachers) with more opportunities to expose our students to a variety of different questioning formats as well as practice for mastery of the concepts. The best part about it is that our students love to carry the education tune! Music has made us MOTIVATED and improved our MEMORY!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of the project is to be able to provide students with engaging songs and videos that use a multisensory approach of music, rhythm and rhyme that help stimulate learning of grade level standards. My hope is to ensure that my students are exposed to and internalize as much informational text as possible that supports the interdisciplinary literacy practice. As a teacher, it will not only help support my instruction through easy introduction to complex concepts, bring enrichment elements to lesson, and most importantly differentiate instruction for all learners.

What will be done with my students

Students will be introduced to the concept in all subject areas for the week, we will watch as a whole class the song or video. On the second viewing I pause when the vocabulary word appears. Then we read the lyrics and use context clues to put the meaning in our own words. The context clues are in our standards. Then we will work cooperatively to answer questions about each video that supports the concepts we have been focusing on without the week. Students will be able to have the opportunity to play games in order to gain more practice as well as show mastery of their learning through a variety of activities. Lastly, students will have the opportunity to create their own lyrics as another way to show what they have learned!

Benefits to my students

This resource is aligned with Florida State Standards cross all subject areas, it provides students with informational text in an engaging lyrical way which increases retention of facts, builds background knowledge, adds to vocabulary banks and more! Students will build literacy across subject areas, add engaging elements to their learning experience, enhance mastery of the concepts taught, and be encouraged to be creative.
