My goal is to have all students participate in the Sunshine State Young Reader Award incentive program, even if reading is a challenge for them. Reading these outstanding books will improve the students’ vocabulary, fluency and reading comprehension. When accessing text that is at a higher level, students have the opportunity to dive deeper into comprehension and participate in book talks.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 100

The goal of this grant was to have all my students participate in the Sunshine State Young Reader Award incentive program, even if reading was a challenge for them. This goal was accomplished!  My students read at least two of the Sunshine State Readers, discussed the stories together and took comprehension tests on them.  They earned scores of 90% or 100% which earned them a charm for their reading necklaces.  By reading and discussing these books the students improved their vocabularies, their fluency scores and their reading comprehension. Since they read text that was at a higher level than they usually read, students had the opportunity to comprehend at an in-depth level as we discussed the characters and the plot.  While we discussed the stories together, the students’ verbal skills improved and their discussions became more specific and detailed. They also became better at using context clues to determine unfamiliar words which is a skill they will need throughout their lives. The most important impact was that the students were exposed to new books which allowed them to experience the joy that literature can bring!  Thank you so much for the generous donation that supported the students at Calusa Park Elementary!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have all students participate in the Sunshine State Young Reader Award incentive program, even if reading is a challenge for them. Reading these outstanding books will improve the students’ vocabulary, fluency and reading comprehension. When accessing text that is at a higher level, students have the opportunity to dive deeper into comprehension and participate in book talks.

What will be done with my students

As the English Language Learner resource teacher, I service students at many grade levels. My students will either read the stories with me in group or use the audiobook membership, and have the book read to them as they follow along with the printed text. We will converse about the chapters and I will clarify any confusion that might exist. We will learn new words which will increase the students' vocabulary. The book discussions will include higher level thinking questions to support thinking and story analysis. Then students will work together to complete tasks or projects such as creating an iMovie about the book, their favorite part, or a possible sequel.

Benefits to my students

All students will have the opportunity to participate in small groups throughout the year. This will enhance their understanding of the reading targets and standards. Reading aloud to students stimulates their interest, their emotional development, and their imagination. As the reading level increases, their verbal skills improve, as well. Hopefully, the students will become experts at using context clues. As they listen to the audio books, they will hear readers with excellent fluency, and this will improve their own fluency. My groups will even become better listeners. Through our discussions, the students will learn how to interact with text and become critical thinkers. Most importantly, the students will be exposed to new books that will allow them to experience the joy that literature can bring!
