Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 733

A "Sammy Shares the Magic of Character" bag was left on the door of a classroom. When the bag was brought into the room, the teacher would make a big deal that Sammy had left something for the class. The teacher would read the letter from the bag to the class explaining what the class was to do with the book. After reading the book, the teacher would post a "We've been visited by Sammy" and then go place the bag on another teacher's door.

Buidling character in young children is very important.  "Sammy Shares the Magic of Character" helps our students connect with different character traits through listening to a read aloud that exhibits a trait. The books chosen are ones that after reading teachers discuss how the trait was shown and how it can be applied to the student's daily life.

The response from the teachers and the students is very positive. The teachers feel using read alouds followed by discussion is a great way to incorporate the traits into the classroom. Students make connections to the characters when they see a character trait they have read about in another student.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

For students to understand each character trait is valuable and assists them in becoming a contributing member of our school community. Everyone can make a difference by the choices they make no matter how small the choice may be.

What will be done with my students

Sammy Seahorse will leave a “Sammy Shares the Magic of Character” bag on one classroom door per grade level.
The bag will contain a message and a book mentoring to a particular character trait.
The classroom teacher will read the book aloud and discuss the theme of the book.
The teacher will encourage the students to pass an act of kindness (using that character trait) throughout the school community.
After reading the book to the class, the teacher will pass the “Sammy Shares the Magic of Character” bag to the next classroom door in his/her grade level until all students have heard and reflected the mentor text.

As a school community, we will be looking for students and classes demonstrating the traits that have been read about – kindness, compassion, empathy, friendship, thankfulness, forgiveness, inclusion, and courage.

Benefits to my students

Reading aloud to students is a lost moment in today’s world. Having books in a bag appear on the class door allows all students to enjoy a read aloud while learning how to treat others and/or how to make a difference in our complicated world.

Budget Narrative

One copy of each mentor text will be purchased. The gift bags will be painted with "Sammy" seahorse on the front. As the bags become warn, a new bag will replace the worn one. Since bags are paper and passing through many hands and on many doors extras have been ordered.
