This year at Avalon, the number of students have grown tremendously in first grade. We are limited to four student computers and one teacher computer. The lack of computers, does not allow every student to access a computer every day. I am asking Century Link to help Avalon get an extra laptop for each class in first grade (5 classes), so our students can learn computer skills and have access to educational websites that will allow them to succeed in each subject area. Laptops can allow students to engage differently in the material, which might help them learn better. Laptops can also allow for different and potentially more effective in-class learning activities, especially for small group work and other collaborative exercises.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

These laptops have been such an amazing addition to our first grade team! Each Teacher received an extra laptop for their classroom to use as they please. The first grade team were so excited when we received our eight laptops!

We are currently doing research in writing on animals. The students have been using our new laptops to go on different student friendly websites and find amazing facts and information about their animal. The students have mastered the use of the laptops in such a short amount of time and love using them to research their favorite animal.

Our students also use a program called I-ready. I-ready allows students to practice areas like phonics, phonological awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension. The extra laptop in our classrooms have made the transition in centers so much easier when going on this reading program! The laptops have also made learning mobile! We are able to take our laptops outside and enjoy the nice fresh air while doing our work and learning new things!

My students love using these new devices and have really mastered the use of them. These laptops have kept them extremely engaged in their activities and have made their learning much more effective. I can’t thank Century Link enough for this amazing grant to Avalon Elementary School.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

This year at Avalon, the number of students have grown tremendously in first grade. We are limited to four student computers and one teacher computer. The lack of computers, does not allow every student to access a computer every day. I am asking Century Link to help Avalon get an extra laptop for each class in first grade (5 classes), so our students can learn computer skills and have access to educational websites that will allow them to succeed in each subject area. Laptops can allow students to engage differently in the material, which might help them learn better. Laptops can also allow for different and potentially more effective in-class learning activities, especially for small group work and other collaborative exercises.

What will be done with my students

When Teachers make a learning environment fun, students are more likely to come to school. I believe using technology like laptops in a classroom is extremely beneficial. Computers are more fun for students than simply sitting at a desk listening to a lecture with a paper and a pencil. I can also challenge students on certain content area. For example, if we are doing a biography on a famous person, I can have certain students use the computers to do research on them and make a board builder on that famous person. This would force students to use quick research and use their creative minds to build a board builder about their famous person.
Our students also use a program called I-ready. I-ready allows students to practice areas like phonics, phonological awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Benefits to my students

I have seen a tremendous amount of growth within my students in the I-ready program and other programs that they use on the computer. I have had a student go from below kindergarten level, to almost second grade level by the end of the year. Students go on I-ready every day but with the limited amount of laptops we have, it is impossible to do now. These laptops can be an amazing addition to add in the new world of technology in classrooms!

We would like to get 10 laptops. Each cost $200. Each Teacher would get 2 extra laptops in their classroom!
