The goal of this grant is to give third grade students experience with comparing and contrasting arthropods based on characteristics. In order for students to get more of a comprehensive understanding of the differences, slide sets will be used to examine, classify, and justify students' reasoning of why each animal belongs in a certain category.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 23

This grant impacted twenty-three third grade students at Naples Park Elementary School.  Students had the opportunity to visually use the arthropod slides to see characteristics of each arthropod from all angles.  They were so excited to see creatures that they had never seen in real life and identify body parts, number of legs, and unique features.  Students worked in groups to classify arthropods as well as organize their thinking in a tree map.  They were enthusiastic to use their verbal skills to teach other groups what they learned about insects, spiders, and crustaceans.  Also, each student wrote a CER (Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning) opinion stating how they classified the arthropods.  Thank you for giving the students a chance to participate in hands on learning to deepen their understanding of classification of arthropods.  They loved looking at incredible slides of these real-life creatures!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to give third grade students experience with comparing and contrasting arthropods based on characteristics. In order for students to get more of a comprehensive understanding of the differences, slide sets will be used to examine, classify, and justify students' reasoning of why each animal belongs in a certain category.

What will be done with my students

After learning about types of arthropods, students will classify the animals in these slide sets by their characteristics. Third grade standards include being able to classify invertebrates and vertebrates. These will be used throughout the animal classification unit.

Benefits to my students

The benefit from this grant will be for students to explore characteristics of arthropods and insects. Students will be able to examine similarities and differences.
Five teachers in third grade and approximately 80 students will benefit from using these slide sets.
