In the real world, time is an important skill that adults need to keep track off. For children, it's also important. Many 3rd grade academic targets involve time-frames, such as fluency with multiplication in math, fluency in reading, as well as learning to become responsible students that need to work within a certain time limit. It is my goal that this grant will allow students to achieve their academic goals, and become more responsible students. Students will be able to keep track of time in order to fluently state multiplication and division facts, in the subject of Math. Students will be able to keep track of time in order to fluently read their reading passages, in English Language Arts. Students will also be able to acquire organizational skills by keeping track of timed activities, or timed excursions, especially for the students that have time modifications in their individualized educational plan.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 16

Students will benefit from the use of timers because it is a tracking device that will enable them to see the time-frame they are able to accomplish certain goals in, and where they need to proceed. My students used the timer necklaces when they went with friends to the library. They benefitted from these necklaces because they were able to keep track of the time they had been out and the time left until they needed to return. My students used the hand-held timers to keep track of their multiplication and division facts within a certain amount of time, so that they could become fluent in these facts. My volunteer used the hand-held timers to time the students on their multiplication facts as well as their reading fluency.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Students will be able to use these timers either by themselves, with a partner, or with a group by: The hand-held timers can will be used to keep track of a end-of-year goal, in English Language Arts. This goal is to be able to read 114 words per minute. Students will use these timers with reading passages. In Math, the students will be able to use the timer to see how many multiplication and division facts they were able to state, within a given time-frame. Their end of year goal is to be able to complete 40 facts within 2 minutes. Students will be able to use the timer necklace if they are "leaders" of science stations in another classroom, and be able to use that for rotations of science stations, and/or for departure of the classroom to come back to home classroom.Students will also use the timer necklace in order to keep track of their time outside of the classroom, when they venture to the library. In addition, either the timer necklace will be able to help students who need extra support managing their time due to individualized educational plans.

Benefits to my students

Students will benefit from the use of timers because it is a tracking device that will enable them to see the time-frame they are able to accomplish certain goals in, and where they need to proceed. The timer necklace is very beneficial for students not only because students often lose track of time when they are away from the classroom and this necklace will help them to not be late, but it is also beneficial because it is a necklace. I have received many hand held timers back broken, because the children would constantly drop them. By being on a necklace, it is a hands-free device! The TopReturn timer is beneficial because it is large and with easily seen numbers. It also has large buttons to make it easier for the students to set.
With the use of these timers, the children will have an easier time keeping track of how their fluency is proceeding, in Math and English Language Arts. They will also be able to start to become responsible citizens, as they manage their time. Children with special needs will benefit from the extra assistance for their time management, as they have a physical item they can manipulate.
