Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 323

Beacon accepts applications from high schools throughout Collier County. To us, this translates into a population of students with wide variety of knowledge and misunderstandings, when it comes to graduation requirements.  The implementation of this grant provided the faculty, students and parents/guardians a clear path towards personalized graduation goals.

Upon enrolling at Beacon, students were provided with course sequence sheets detailing which courses they needed to meet graduation requirements.  This sheet provided the student, teacher, parent/guardian and school counselor the opportunity to visually map out a time frame and keep track of grades earned.  Students were also provided with their starting grade point average, as of the date of enrollment at Beacon, and status of their State testing, which are critical components in earning a diploma versus a certificate of completion.

Students were met in groups and individually, to address their needs and to monitor their progress.  Depending on the student’s progress, parents/guardians were included into our individual meetings as we provided strategies in helping students earn credits.  As students needed to register for the ACT or SAT, individual assistance was provided and admission tickets were printed for them, along with test day materials.

An extension to graduation was helping students obtain an FSA ID and help them complete the student portion of the FAFSA.  Meeting students in their homerooms provided the opportunity to inform them of the financial opportunities available for their post graduate experience.  Individualized sessions, provided students with additional information which included interest inventories, school and career searches.  These helped students strategize and learn organizational and conversational skills.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students enrolled at Beacon High School will be able to identify courses, standardized and concordant assessments, overall graduation requirements, develop positive mindsets and determine post-secondary goals and actions needed to be successful.

What will be done with my students

Students will meet with me individually to determine which graduation requirements are still unmet. They will receive a graduation checklist indicating which goals have been met and those still needing attention. Small group sessions will be held to help students change their mindset towards positive actions and goals. A bulletin board will be set up where students will set their goals and actions at the beginning of the year. As students move forward we will celebrate their attainment of those goals. Students will be well informed of testing dates and assisted in determining which date(s) best suits their schedule to take the SAT/ACT. Pull out sessions will be scheduled to help the student register for the ACT/SAT, take their picture for their admission ticket, and print out their ticket. Pull out sessions will be handy in helping the student apply for their FSA ID, be informed and instructed about the FAFSA, college options-state colleges/universities, vocational schools, and overall requirements. Students that have specific post-secondary goals in mind, will be assisted in researching their individual school/track needs.

Benefits to my students

Students at Beacon are at great risk for dropping out. This is their last chance in many cases of earning a high school diploma. My students receive individualized attention and direction. They are given realistic data which helps them develop a better vision of their current situation and future possibilities. A well informed student has a better chance of developing into a successful member of society.

Budget Narrative

The colored paper will be purchased to identify grade levels and for topic materials for small group mindset matters development. The ink cartridges will go into the printer that will be used to print the admission tickets (color) and any handout required by the student.
