The goal of this project is to engage our high school students in opportunities to explore and celebrate strong women throughout history through the use of various autobiographical and biographical pieces in a variety of media formats. Students will be encouraged to engage in in-depth explorations of historical female leaders (writers, activists, reformers, etc.) as well as self-exploration, examining their own pasts, present lives, and ways in which they can contribute to the progress of our global community, not only for themselves but for future generations. Students will use these female leaders and their actions and choices in history as models to discuss and synthesize events and information, and ultimately apply it to hypothetical situations in which they use the leaders of the past to create action steps and try to solve current day societal challenges.

Appropriately leveled reading/audio/visual pieces from and about a variety of historical female leaders (through both primary and secondary sources) will be utilized in helping students explore who these women were and are, how they developed into leaders, and the social barriers they fought through and against. Students will then take their new experiences and knowledge (both through classroom discussions, lessons, and independent research opportunities) to create multi-media presentations about these women. These presentations can be shared and used by other grade levels, schools, the community, and for years to come. The resources purchased for and created through this grant are to be shared from class to class throughout the school/district as a cross-curricular unit for both English and History (necessitating these two departments to work closely together hand-in-hand), and they align with Florida State standards and our current Collier County Public School curricular materials for both subject areas of English and Social Studies. Students will be exposed to new ideas, historical events, and will engage in analytical thinking, problem solving, research, and product creation that will go down in history!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

We cannot thank the donors enough for the incredible learning opportunities and discussions and deep readings this grant afforded.  Through this grant, my students (along with students from two other intensive reading classes) engaged in in-depth explorations and research activities of historical female leaders (writers, activists, scientists, teachers, reformers, etc.) as well as self-explorations of their own pasts and the strong women in them.  Students engaged in daily read alounds of autobiographical and biographical materials, as well as weekly article readings from the current New York Times Scholastic Upfront Magazine for high school students.  While gathering this information, students engaged in classroom discussions, art analysis, close readings, Socratic Seminars, and the research process.  Students created multi-media presentations about these women and presented to other classes.

What will be done with my students

Students and educators will participate in daily read alouds of autobiographical and biographical materials directly connected to their daily lesson curricular materials in an effort to spark student interest and to connect to/build on background knowledge students will need. They will also engage with weekly articles from Scholastic Upfront magazine dealing with worldly current events, highlighting strong leaders of our time, civics questions, and debatable issues for teens dealing with issues that female leaders are working for and against today.

The educators will engage their students in the regular daily curricular materials with these grant materials as supplements, being sure to incorporate not only the reading materials but the audio visual components (speeches, historical clips, various documents, photographs) as well.

Once the unit progresses, students will then choose a research topic of study. They will follow the CCPS research model and complete the necessary components. Students will create both a research report as well as a multi-media presentation to be presented to their fellow classmates/administrators/family members at a project presentation day.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to interview (real or mock) current-day female leaders who have influenced the students' lives in some way.

Some of the women to be explored: Borte Ujin, Joan of Arc, Indira Ghandi, Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Elizabeth II, Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Victoria, Margaret Thatcher, Hatshepsut, Catherine the Great, Shirley Chisholm, Jane Addams, Marie Curie, Angela Merkel, Benazir Bhutto, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bessie Coleman, Virginia Woolf, Mother Teresa, Katherine Mansfield, Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Coretta Scott King, Georgia O'Keefe, Frida Kahlo, Lise Borsum, Hannie Schaft, Maya Angelou, Zora Neale Hurston.

Benefits to my students

Students will not only be exposed to a variety of high-quality multi-media materials, but they will connect the "new to the known" as well as to themselves and their lives through this enriching experience. Students will engage (with support) in the CCPS research model, as well as use their knowledge to create new ideas, information, and presentations. Students will be exposed to the state standards, cross-curricular applications, interviewing skills, deep analytical reading skills, public speaking situations and experiences, and high order thinking applications.

Budget Narrative

The books will be used as read alouds and for research. Research will also be done with CCPS online resources (SIRS, for example). Presentations will be stored on EDMODO/ANGEL.
