These students are faced with many different challenges, which can alter their future. Its very difficult to do your best academically when all you can think about is how hungry you are. I want to go beyond just academics. It's imperative that I make sure they are taught how to grow food for themselves. I would love for my students to compost and keep a garden so they understand how to grow nutritious food that they do not need money for. These students are the best that I have and I want to help them be the best that they can be and prepare them for their future.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 100

My classroom loves Mother Earth!. It is up to each one of us to learn what we can do to help sustain our Mother Earth. Then, we add to this knowledge as we grow and my students will be a good steward of nature. These are lessons they will remember for the rest of their lives.

My students love our worms, they have taught them so much on soli and vermicomposting. They have had first-hand experiences with what it takes to make good soil for our food.

Thank you for helping me give my students real-life science lessons.

the students were so happy to be able to have their very own composer and we are using it daily. The worm factory is a huge hit with all the students, we are so excited to have this in our classroom!

Thanks again for the huge impact your making in Collier classrooms!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

These students are faced with many different challenges, which can alter their future. Its very difficult to do your best academically when all you can think about is how hungry you are. I want to go beyond just academics. It's imperative that I make sure they are taught how to grow food for themselves. I would love for my students to compost and keep a garden so they understand how to grow nutritious food that they do not need money for. These students are the best that I have and I want to help them be the best that they can be and prepare them for their future.

What will be done with my students

I want my students to learn how to grow and maintain a garden using compost to grow stronger and more nutritious food. During the growing and composting process I will have my students journal weekly and draw illustrations of what is happening in the garden and in the composter. I believe the students will enjoy not being wasteful by composting, as well as growing things that they can eat. For this project my hope is that my students will learn how they can create healthy soil, which grows healthy food that is very easy to grow and maintain for themselves, and how the entire process benefits the earth. Thanks to Tom's of Maine for caring about our planet and making it a top priority for generations to come!

The composters and plants will be useful tools to teach the students sustainability and encouraging them to eat more fruits and vegetables.
I also want to ensure that my students are environmentally conscious and composting can help with that.

Benefits to my students

My students will be able to compost left over scraps from the cafeteria. This will allow the students to work on not being wasteful and caring for our planet. I also plan on having the students journal weekly about what they observe in their gardens so they have ideas on how to improve.
