Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 350

This has been another great year for our reading incentive program!  Students read books at or above their independent reading level and take Reading Counts computer quizzes to earn badges and prizes. As they reach higher and higher goals they continue to increase their levels and stamina!  It is very rewarding to see our 2nd grade students go from simple picture books to high interest chapter books and series.  More and more first graders are participating and even our kinder kids are independently choosing books and passing quizzes! Students can earn 8 different badges to wear on their library lanyards.  Their pictures are continuosly displayed on a digital picture frame and students spin the prize wheel when they earn a badge.  Prizes include books, trinkets, small toys, lunch in the library, t-shirts, and a mid and end of the year celebration!  Our program motivates students to read! Students are making gains and developing independent reading skills.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to motivate students to increase independent reading time resulting in improved levels and skills. I want to continue to create excitement about reading by celebrating our students' efforts in Reading Counts.

What will be done with my students

Reading Counts is a computerized program that allows students to take quizzes on books that they have independently read. Students earn points for the quizzes they pass. Each time students reach a predetermined goal they come to the media center to be recognized and receive a specific "Brag Tag" to display on their library lanyards. They will also get to "spin the wheel" to win a prize! At the end of the year, students receive a ball chain so they can wear all of the tags they have earned. Along with the Brag Tags students will qualify for additional incentives as they earn more points. For example, at ten points students will have their picture taken for our Star Reader Powerpoint which loops throughout the year. This year I'd like to display the pictures on a digital picture frame. The more students read, the more tags and rewards they earn. Other incentives include bookmarks, books, lunch in the library, reading t-shirts, and an end of the year party!
Last year was second year using brag tags and incentives and the students really loved it! Excitement and participation grew throughout the year. Our book circulation increased and reading scores improved! Our plans are for this year to be even better!

Benefits to my students

Research has proven the importance of independent reading. As little as fifteen minutes a day can have a big impact especially for struggling readers. Reading Counts motivates students to read and builds confidence! It reinforces comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills. It also celebrates success, promotes independence, and accountability. Our Brag Tags and incentives help to motivate even our most reluctant readers to Read! Read! Read!.

Budget Narrative

This is our third year with this program. The budget includes replacement Brag Tags for ones that students earned and were able to keep at the end of the year. I also added a digital picture frame to display looping pictures of our Reading Stars.
