This grant helped our entrepreneurial breakfast business tremendously. Many of our utensils and appliances were outdated, not working or we didn’t have everything necessary to cook breakfast efficiently. Through this grant we were able to purchase a dishwasher and stove. These big appliances allowed students to use them in a safe manner and practice cooking and washing, loading and unloading the dishwasher. We had replaced some smaller items prior to this so the grant helped to purchase other appliances like griddles, a toaster, bagel slicer, cleaner towels for proper and hygienic cleaning as well as utensils like spatulas, whisks, measuring cups and cookware. The new griddles have allowed the students to learn the proper way to cook fried eggs, scrambled eggs, omelettes, pancakes and hashbrowns. Our kitchen now has the necessary tools and equipment to continue running our on campus breakfast business as well as learn important preparation, cooking, storing and cleaning methods.

Additionally, the kitchen is used with our transition students, those who can return to school up to age 22. These students learn independent life skills with the help of all of the kitchen items that this grant allowed us to purchase.

As a result of this grant , all of my students have benefitted from learning life skills in our kitchen. Without your generous donation, none of this would have been possible!! Thank you so much for this wonderful gift!!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to help students to maintain and grow our entrepreneurial breakfast business at school by purchasing new equipment and updating kitchen appliances.

What will be done with my students

By updating and purchasing new equipment for our kitchen, all of my students will have the opportunity to help maintain and grow their entrepreneurial breakfast program at school. The students will take part in choosing the appliances from local businesses and finding the best deal. Many of my students will work with me until the age of 22 and this will assist in their transition from school to independent living within our community. By teaching them these vital skills, they will learn kitchen safety, how to use appliances and utensils, how to cook basic meals as well as learning how to be independent. This program is vital to each of my students as we focus not only on cooking, but communicating with adults and peers, working as a team to cook an order, deliver orders, take constructive criticism and following multi-step directions. The new appliances will help students learn about daily living skills as well as basic job skills in a kitchen and within a business setting.

Benefits to my students

With the new appliances, the students will be able to continue their business and hopefully expand from serving food three days a week to five days a week. It will afford my students the opportunity of learning life long daily living and independent living skills. This is just one small step to helping my students be successful academically and in their adult lives.

Budget Narrative

All items will be utilized in our classroom kitchen for our program. Two sets each of cooling racks and utensils will be purchased. All other items include tax as well as the estimated cost for each appliance.
