Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Lucie Jenny MacCarthy Music Fund - The Community Foundation of Collier County - $500.00
Our goal is to help students understand that they are an important part of the community. They will learn to develop their musical talent with the collaboration of our LOE Music Teacher. We choose songs appropriate to share with seniors at a retirement facility. Students will become more engaged in reaching out to others in our community and develop their musical talent.
The classroom teacher will start out by reading an appropriate-age-level book which describes the type of facility the students will be visiting. The classroom teacher will then teach the students what the expectations are for the trip. Students will learn and practice the music with the assistance of the Music Teacher coordinating songs to encourage the residents to sing along. They will also be using musical instruments such as little hand shakers or tambourines which will coincide with the enhancement of the musical piece they are performing. They will also make a couple of cards to share with their "Senior Buddies" so all residents will get one and no one will be left out. Students will also include Art by making some type of craft to share and that the residents may also keep. Students will be paired with residents to share some of their Science classwork that they have worked on and answer any questions the residents may have. Students are also invited upstairs to rehab to interact with those patients, which shows students that all residents are included and no one is left out just because they are injured or unable to go to the main room. We try and make 2 trips each
year to develop that community relationship.
We both feel there is a terrific benefit for both students and residents to share in this opportunity. It shows the students how to interact music with learning and sharing. Students are provided with an experience that exposes them to different ages and how they can develop friendships. Students will have the benefit of learning different genres of music and songs from an entirely different generation. They really enjoy this new friendship with their Senior Buddies.
The Music Teacher and Classroom Teacher also benefit from this great opportunity to collaborate, work, and plan together to provide this learning lesson and experience this outreach to the community. It has also been noted that the Classroom Teacher also develops her musical talent and shared a song she wrote to share with the residents called "Friends Forever".
There will be 2 trips to The Moorings which is quite a distance from LOE. The bus is needed for transportation. A substitute teacher will be needed to cover the music classes while the music teacher is away. It may be necessary to purchase musical instruments to enhance the performance so that each student will have their own so no one will be left out. Based upon the time of the year, students will make some type of craft to give to the residents for them to keep.
