My goal is to have all students participate in the Sunshine State Young Reader Award incentive program, even if reading is a challenge for them. Reading these award-winning books will improve each student’s vocabulary, fluency and reading comprehension. When accessing text that is at a higher level, students have the opportunity to dive deeper into comprehension and participate in book talks.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

What a wonderful year this has been for the students at Calusa Park Elementary! One of the goals of this grant was to have all my students participate in the Sunshine State Young Reader Award incentive program, even if reading was a challenge for them. This goal was accomplished! My students read at least two of the Sunshine State Readers, discussed the stories together and took comprehension tests on them. They earned scores of 90% or 100% which earned them a charm for their reading necklaces. Many became eligible for the voting process and the ice cream party. My students had the opportunity to participate in small group reading throughout the year. This enhanced their understanding of the many reading targets and standards. As the reading level of the books increased, their verbal skills improved as we discussed the stories together. Each of my students became experts at using context clues to determine the meaning of new words. As they listened to the book on Overdrive, they heard the story read fluently which improved their own fluency. My groups became better listeners, as well. The students learned how to interact with text and become critical thinkers. Most importantly, the students were exposed to new books. Many were found reading instead of doing other things that were not as important. They finally experienced the joy that literature can bring! I was able to purchase even more books than first planned, so we circulated the books through different grade levels and the media center allowing hundreds of students to enjoy this fabulous gift! Students were so excited to be able to read a Sunshine State Reader that they cheered when one was available! The students and teachers can’t thank Suncoast Credit Union enough for approving and funding my grant!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have all students participate in the Sunshine State Young Reader Award incentive program, even if reading is a challenge for them. Reading these award-winning books will improve each student’s vocabulary, fluency and reading comprehension. When accessing text that is at a higher level, students have the opportunity to dive deeper into comprehension and participate in book talks.

What will be done with my students

As the English Language Learner resource teacher, I service students at many grade levels. My students will either read the stories with me in group, or use the audiobook membership, and have the books read to them as they follow along with the printed text. We will discuss the different chapters and I will clarify any confusion that might exist. We will learn new words which will increase the students' vocabulary. The book discussions will include higher level thinking questions to support thinking and story analysis. Then students will work together to complete tasks or projects such as producing an iMovie or Flipgrid about the entire book, their favorite part, or a possible sequel.

Benefits to my students

All students will have the opportunity to participate in small groups throughout the year. This will enhance their understanding of the reading targets and standards. Reading aloud to students stimulates their interest, their emotional development, and their imagination. As the reading level increases, their verbal skills improve, as well, especially their vocabulary. Hopefully, the students will become experts at using context clues to determine the meaning of new words. As they listen to the audio books, they will hear readers with excellent fluency, and this will improve their own fluency. My groups will even become better listeners. Through our discussions, the students will learn how to interact with text and become critical thinkers. Most importantly, the students will be exposed to new books that will allow them to experience the joy that literature can bring!
