Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

All 1st and 2nd grade students got to experience observing the entire life cycle of a butterfly. Each classroom got 4 caterpillars. The classes observed them and notebooked about them until they turned into butterflies. Then they got to let them go in our butterfly garden. We ended up having a little bit of money left over so one of our Kindergarten teachers wanted to weed and replant our butterfly garden. I purchased peat pots for them with the remainder of our money. The kindergartners planted milkweed seeds and watch them grow as they learned about plants. Then they were able to plant them right into our butterfly garden so we can observe the butterflies in their natural habitat. Thank you so much for funding such a wonderful learning experience for all of our students!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To engage students in science while teaching them about the life cycle of a butterfly by watching a caterpillar go through all the stages to become a butterfly.

What will be done with my students

Students will get caterpillars and watch for two weeks as the caterpillars grow, form a chrysalis, and then come out as butterflies. During these two weeks classrooms will be focusing on reading about caterpillars and butterflies, learning about each stage of the life cycle and those life cycles of other animals. Students will participate in projects that have to do with the butterfly life cycle as well. Students in every classroom in 2nd grade will get to observe the caterpillars every day and note each change in their science notebooks.

Benefits to my students

This allows them a hands-on look at the life cycle of the butterfly instead of just reading about it. Each classroom will get 5 caterpillars to observe each day. This will allow students to develop their skills of observation and data collection.

Budget Narrative

9 sets of 5 caterpillars with caterpillar food plus shipping. (This allows for 1 set of 5 caterpillars for each 2nd grade classroom plus 1 extra in case some die off)

Items

# Item Cost
1 5 Larvae Caterpillar Kits (9) $141.12
2 Shipping $30.56
