Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 95

The skill of reading music is something that will last a lifetime.  Thanks to your generous donation, these third grade students can use their new skills on their very own instrument!

The students were so excited about the delivery of the recorders.  They just couldn't wait to start playing them They echoed my examples and tried to match the sound and fingers.  Next, we were able to review our rhythm reading skills and actually “read” the rhythms that they saw.  Using piano and CD accompaniments, we were making some music!

I know that I was also excited to see them take their rhythm reading skills and apply it to notes on a staff.  The challenge of determining the pitch by its placement on the staff was difficult.  It took us several weeks to get used to this idea.  As the next weeks passed, it was obvious that some students were able to move more quickly than others.  I provided the students with music written at different levels so they could choose and attain their personal goals.

We prepared our songs and were able to perform for their parents.  The parents seemed impressed at the progress that their child and the other classmates had made.  As our school is located in an area where the families are struggling financially, it was even more special when they realized that the students could take the instruments home with them.

From nursery rhymes to Beethoven, my students have blossomed in their ability to read music, make beautiful sounds and enjoy the pride of accomplishment!

Thank you so much for bringing the joy of music to these precious children!

Reading music

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I would like the third grade students at Avalon to experience the joy of having their own instrument and learning to play it without the burden of paying for it.

What will be done with my students

1. Students will choose the color of their instrument, write their name on their book, recorder, and case, and learn how to properly care for the recorder.
2. Over the following 15-18 music classes the students will learn the basics of recorder playing, (fingering, posture, breath control) and learn the basics of reading music. (staff, treble clef, names of notes, rhythm...)
3.With the books students can practice during music class, at home and in music room before school starts.
4. In May the students will perform for their parents on the stage, using selected music to share their level of skill.
5.I have many students that keep working on their recorders in subsequent years and can perform in class, for their family and when the 4th graders play and sing at Artis-Naples.

Benefits to my students

The ability to read music is similar to speaking and reading another language. Once they learn the basics of reading music, each student can easily progress at their own pace. That's why the books are so important.
Students at this age (3rd grade) are so excited to be able to play an instrument themselves! The recorders and books enable the students work, learn, play and perform using their newly acquired skills!
Even though the grant is written for 3rd grade, I have many students that keep working on their recorders in subsequent years and can perform in class, for their family and when the 4th graders play and sing at Artis-Naples,
