The art department at Palmetto Ridge High School NEEDS to acquire specialized art materials to provide for diverse individual student accommodations. I am teaching Visual Performance, a modified-curriculum visual arts class, to students with various intellectual ability levels. Some of these young adults have severe intellectual disabilities that cause delayed physical development of their fine-motor function. There are specialized art tools and materials that have been designed to help these students become engaged as artists and allow for better inclusion and individual differentiation of the art curriculum.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 24

Using specialized tools and materials in the art studio with my students with intellectual disabilities allowed for better inclusion and individual differentiation which engaged them in authentic art experiences throughout the year. The great variety of drawing and painting experiences allowed these students to develop and demonstrate skills in critical thinking, creativity, and art-making while using a variety of materials and techniques.

The use of the self-portrait mirrors offered various opportunities to meet these artists where they were developmentally and accommodate each individual's needs. For example, some of the higher functioning individuals were able to explore accuracy in facial proportion, while others focused on facial feature placement, and all were able to watch their facial expressions change to reflect their emotions in their personal artwork.

These art tools will continue to affect multiple art experiences and accommodate future art students that are participating in their least restrictive environment and individualized education plans.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The art department at Palmetto Ridge High School NEEDS to acquire specialized art materials to provide for diverse individual student accommodations. I am teaching Visual Performance, a modified-curriculum visual arts class, to students with various intellectual ability levels. Some of these young adults have severe intellectual disabilities that cause delayed physical development of their fine-motor function. There are specialized art tools and materials that have been designed to help these students become engaged as artists and allow for better inclusion and individual differentiation of the art curriculum.

What will be done with my students

Students will engage in authentic art experiences while demonstrating skill in using a variety of art media and techniques. Studio emphasis is on integrating personal expression with the elements of art and principles of design while recognizing and identifying vocabulary related to the visual arts. I teach art as a means of self-expression and visual communication. Everyone has the potential to develop critical thinking, creativity, and artistic skills. As we progress through the art curriculum, the use of specially designed scissors, paint brushes with large handles, big markers, sidewalk chalk, finger-paints, textured papers, playdoh, and mirrors will affect multiple art experiences throughout this school year and accommodate many students in future art courses that are participating in their least restrictive environment and individualized education plans. I will be able to facilitate opportunities for success which promotes personal empowerment and positive identity, which results in community-building, respect for self and others, and the freedom to create artwork that is a true expression of self!

Benefits to my students

With the use of these specialized art materials and tools, the drawing experiences and painting opportunities will meet these young adults where they are developmentally and allow them to participate in authentic art-making. The use of the self-portrait mirrors will allow for opportunities to differentiate and accommodate for each artist in the class. Some of the higher functioning individuals will be able to explore accuracy in realistic facial proportion, while others will focus on accuracy in facial feature placement, and all will be able to participate in watching their facial expressions change to reflect various emotions as a form of self-expression. Some of these tools and materials will last for many years and be used to benefit future artists with special needs.

Budget Narrative

During long-term planning for this modified-curriculum Visual Performance art class, and after interacting and understanding the diverse needs of each individual artist, the necessity for these specialized art materials and tools became apparent immediately. All requested items will be used to enhance the engagement and individual experiences of each artist. I have compared prices for these materials at a number of well-known art supply vendors to find the best values for quality products.
