Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 23

With this real-world project, my students were able to obtain a deeper understanding of the renewable forms of energy and how they create a smaller carbon footprint.  This project gave my Cambridge 5th graders a deeper understanding of the forms of enregy and how we use them in today's world.  The project, How Big Is Your Footprint?, gave my students opportunities to enhance their critical thinking skills while creating, designing, building, and presenting with technology.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide students with hands on experience in designing and building authentic renewable energy source collectors.

What will be done with my students

Students will research how energy is collected, the cost of each type and the carbon footprint that is left from each. They will be given the task of designing and building an authentic renewable energy source collector using K'NEX Education Renewable Energy Sets. Students will work with the constraints of designing and building the most cost efficient (K'NEX pieces will each have a price set by the teacher) energy source collector while also trying to maintain the smallest carbon footprint. Students will present their models to the class and design a Glogster to explain the benefits of their design.

Benefits to my students

This project provides a perfect platform for students to practice knowledge utilization with the information they learn about the forms of energy in Science class. This project will allow my 5th graders to enhance their critical thinking skills to solve a real world problem in a creative, STEM related manner all while having fun!

Budget Narrative

Students will work in groups of 4 or less. Each group will receive one K'NEX Education Renewable Energy Set to design and build their energy source collector. Each student will have a Glogster account that will help them present their research and designs through a multimedia platform.
