Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 800

The placement of the Aquaponics Garden at our school was so important, because it allowed all the students to view the fish, and observe the growth of the plants.  The location was in a main hallway in the school where the stduents in the morning eat breakfast.  There were so many times when I saw the "little ones" eating while they were watching the fish.  It was a very reqarding experience for my classess (44 stduents), and the school to witness the growth of the plants and the fish.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is continue to grow herbs and vegetables in our school's aquaponic garden. We are a Blue Zone Certified School and this alternative growing system enriches and educates our students to the alternate ways of growing food.

What will be done with my students

The system needs to be replenished with new fish, and plants/seeds to continue to be utilized by the students of the school. My class will be the caretakers of the fish portion of this system; providing the fish with food. The individual classes of the school will have the opportunity each month to grow a crop in the "garden" portion of the system.

Benefits to my students

The benefits will be the skills the students will gain in growing their own crops and watching how the fish contribute to the entire growing system. The knowledge gained by the students can be applied to the Science and Math curriculum in all grade levels.

Budget Narrative

The Aquaponic system was purchased, 2 years ago, through the FL Agriculture in the Classroom grant. This grant will provide for the supplies to continue the school-wide project.
