The Exploring Technical Design and Modeling course is being offered to students at Cypress Palm Middle School this school year. This course will prepare students for the Engineering and Robotics courses offered at the high school levels and will teach students highly sought after complex thinking skills. In this course, students will learn to create and draw technical designs, then apply their skills to using AutoCAD software to draw a 3D image of their design. The students’ experience ends with the 3D software. With this grant, the technology class can purchase three 3D printers to enhance each student’s experience in learning the complete designing and modeling process.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

The Technology department at CYpress Palm middle school would like to thank Suncoast Credit Union and Champions For Learning for the opportunity to bring 3D printing technology into the classroom. With the purchase of 3 3D printers and the required materials and accessories, the students were able to learn valuable skills that will help them to be better prepared going forward into the 21st century. The skills the students learned were using various measuring tools and software to construct 3D renderings of various objects that were built using the 3D printers.

The overall affect for the students was the hands on experience of designing, building, evaluating, and adjusting a product so that it can be useful to society. These skills are required in many industries and to help solve many problems. The students also learned valuable skills of using various measuring devices, critical thinking, team work, collaborating with others, organizational skills and advanced software and technology. With opportunities such as this our students, both current and future, will be able to grasp a better understanding of how complex problems are solved and how they can apply these skills to their own situations. At the end they will see a tangible evidence of their harwork and dedication.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The Exploring Technical Design and Modeling course is being offered to students at Cypress Palm Middle School this school year. This course will prepare students for the Engineering and Robotics courses offered at the high school levels and will teach students highly sought after complex thinking skills. In this course, students will learn to create and draw technical designs, then apply their skills to using AutoCAD software to draw a 3D image of their design. The students’ experience ends with the 3D software. With this grant, the technology class can purchase three 3D printers to enhance each student’s experience in learning the complete designing and modeling process.

What will be done with my students

The students will be presented with real world problems and then design and produce a solution. To achieve this, the students will apply scientific and mathematical concepts while learning about the design process. They will also learn to use the associated tools used in technical designing. The students will then apply their skills to using 3D software to design individual projects. After developing their individual skills, the students will form groups where they will apply their skills to build individual parts that will be designed to fit together and work to solve a problem. With the 3D printers, the students will be able to produce a real model of their individual designs and group designs that will help them to receive a true hands-on experience and understanding of the design and modeling process.

Benefits to my students

3D printers are tools used in just about every design field imaginable. From manufacturing and engineering to architecture and the medical fields. 3D printers are becoming a tool every student will need to understand and work with. Having an understanding and ability to work with 3D printers will make students more knowledgeable in many career fields. The process and concepts used in manufacturing and engineering are used in solving complex real-world problems throughout many industries and businesses. With the use of 3D printers, the students will have the opportunity to learn how to work with this advanced design and modeling tool and gain an understanding of how it works to solve problems. With the addition of the 3D printers, the students will learn the whole process of technical design and modeling with hands-on projects that will increase the retainability of the skills and enhance their learning experience that will prepare them for a highly skilled workforce. By creating tangible models, the students can acknowledge first-hand, how all their skills come together to form a true working model of their very own individual and team designs. When students can physically handle and work with a real structure of their own creative design, it will enrich their learning experience and boost their enthusiasm to learn.

Budget Narrative

The budget includes three 3D printers and three types of printing filaments for each printer. The difference in filaments will allow the students to build prints of various types of materials needed to construct parts requiring different levels of durability. Included in the budget are replacement print beds which are used after a number of prints are made and maintenance kits for each printer. Maintenance kits include spare nozzles and nozzle casings and parts.

The purchase of this equipment and accessories will last many years and allow the current and future students of the new Exploring Technical Design and Modeling course a chance to learn and experience advance technology in the classroom.
