Golden Gate Elementary is a Leader in Me (Steven Covey, 7 Habits of Very Effective People) school. We have many students with special learning needs, secondary to English as a second language and learning disabilities. These students often have difficulty seeing the Leader in Me in themselves academically.
Third grade is a turning point in grade-level performance assessment, especially in independent English reading and comprehension. Unfortunately, at this point, reading is not fun yet for many of these students. However, picking up a colorful game they can play (individually or with friends) that enable mastery of the needed reading skills would be very motivating and appealing.
Our request is an interactive Grab-and-Play reading and writing resource that fosters a sense of empowerment and self-direction; character traits critical in leader development.
Let’s give these growing readers opportunities to participate in success…and have fun doing it! As Mary Poppins inspired generations with, “For every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.”
Context for the need and benefit of these games:
There is a daily intervention time, which seeks to reinforce developing foundational reading skills. It is arranged in a cycle of (1) computer enrichment lessons which identify specific needs of each student, (2) teacher-supported lessons to target those skills, and (3) independent practice opportunities. The computer lessons pinpoint exact areas of need. These needs are then addressed in teacher-facilitated small group lessons, then reinforced during independent practice time.
These engaging grab-and-play games are impactful tools that enhance the learner’s individual practice rotation. These organized classroom-based sets would be readily accessible to each student, at the individual practice station. The students will pull a specific game matched to the skill-need identified earlier by the teacher and computer assessment tool. They will be able to self-check, as well as monitor their personal progress on their path to mastery of reading comprehension.
The games also support versatility within the practice time and can be utilized independently, with partners, and in collaborative small groups. Partner and small group implementation also fosters communication goals and social interactions, with the opportunity to further develop leadership skills.
As a Leader in Me school, we emphasize beginning with the end in mind. However, sometimes our students cannot yet identify the intermediate steps to successfully reach that end. I believe that these games will facilitate self-directed learning to achieve grade-level reading competence in a way that will also build individual self-confidence.
In other words, in tune with Mary Poppins, “In every job that must be done, LETS’CREATE an element of fun. Find the fun and SNAP the job’s a game!!!

The need is two complete sets of learning games, per third grade classroom, early learning
(K-1) and 2nd-3rd to meet the broad range of current student skills. Two sets for a single class would impact students daily this year. On average, there are 18-20 students in each classroom. There are over 190 third grade students (10 classrooms), so we are proposing several investment choices for maximum benefit of the school, not only this year but for years to come.
Bronze = 1 library of 2 learning game sets
(18 students, 1 classroom). $312.18
Silver = 3 libraries of learning game sets
(54-58 Students, 3 classrooms) $936.54
Gold = 7 libraries of learning game sets
(126-134 students, 7 classrooms)
Platinum = 10 libraries of learning game sets
(180-200 students, 10 classrooms)
