Golden Gate Elementary is a unique school in the sense that we have a large population of students with special learning needs and students who speak English as their second language. Golden Gate Elementary School’s academic performance was in the bottom 300 statewide for the 2016-2017 school year. As a result, our school day is extended in order to meet the reading needs of our students. This gives us a one-hour block of time geared solely towards reading intervention.

In third grade, it is expected that they have mastered phonics, however without this knowledge they are not performing at grade level. A new approach to learning in multiple skill levels is offered with the Reading and Writing Folder Game Library Sets for grades K-3. Students will be able to improve in language, foundational reading, phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, grammar, writing, language, comprehension and vocabulary.

My vision is to instill an excitement in reading so that each student will be able to close the gap between their independent and grade level performance. Reading is a skill used daily in all subject areas and is necessary for success in education.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

Dear Champions for Learning and W.I.N.G.S,

My students and I are forever grateful for your generosity in founding our classroom grant "Reading is dreaming with open eyes".  These interactive folder games have given the students a new enthusiasm for learning.  They are excited each and every day to work on reading skills that are found within these interactive foldable actives.  I see a drive in my students that I have been looking for all year.  These activities come in multiple grade levels, which allows for the students to truly work on the reading level they are on, giving them a differentiated way of learning. The foundation of reading is used for so much more than just reading a book, it is used in every subject area.  By increasing in their reading strategies, my students are being given a chance to succeed in all academics.

Thank you so much!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

As a special needs teacher, I met with several small groups of students daily. One of the most challenging target areas is the foundation of reading. Students are taught reading targets that are aligned with Lakeshore foldable games.

After small group instruction, students will be able to practice their newly acquired skills independently or with classmates on their same level. This approach will be more appealing to students because it offers a more exciting and hands on way to practice what they have learned. They will gain confidence by successfully building their reading skills at their own pace and seeing independent progress.

Benefits to my students

Without having the foundation of reading skills, students are unable to participate fully in the classroom. There is a sense of confusion and lack of confidence that inhibits their potential socially and academically. Once they have mastered reading skills, success in many areas will be obtained. Reading opens student’s eyes to new experiences, adventures, opportunities and knowledge. "Reading is dreaming with open eyes".
