Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

The equipment we received allowed us to continue to expand and exhance our JROTC Drum Corps.   As a result, we have been able to do much more for the community than ever before.  In addition, I have been able to get more cadets involved with drum corps.   One of my cadets was an at risk freshman and the drum corps really gave her a sense of purpose at our school.  In fact, she will be coming back next year as a leader in my JROTC program.   Some of the events we have supported include the Naples Christmas Parade, Project Unify, which is an event to help special needs kids, veterans events, school events, additional community events.   It is wonderful to how much the community reacts to these students.   Pride all the way around but more importantly, something to help keep them in school!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To enhance our JROTC drum corps so that we can provide better ceremonial support to our community

What will be done with my students

We will use the new Drum Carriers to greatly improve our drum corps. In the few years since we formed our drum corps (with support from Champions for Learning), student interest and participation has been amazing. Also, the number and quality of events we have been involved in has grown too. This past year we supported the NAMI walk, Naples Christmas Parade, American Heart Association Heartwalk, Lake Park Elementary School, the Military Officers Association and Independence Day events in addition to other local organizations. Everyone loves the performances and they wish we could do even more. We have up to 30 cadets who are interested in the Drum Corps but we simply don't have enough equipment. We now have a wonderful volunteer who is training our kids to become so much better than they have ever been before. He has directed a number of drum lines and is moving us forward in a professional manner. The cadets love being in Drum Corps and supporting our community.

Benefits to my students

The Drum Carriers will allow us to train and perform with more cadets than we can now with much higher quality. We do not have enough carriers on hand, and the ones we do have are old and unserviceable. Four years ago we received a grant through the Champions for learning to get our drum corps started and we want to do whatever we can to keep enhancing this wonderful resource.
