Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 15

The generous grant we recieved made a huge impact to our class breakfast program! Thanks to the grant we were able to replace our kitchen supplies and purchase the materials needed to support our breakfast program. This program teaches valuable skills that will help these students once they graduate from our program. They perform job duties typically done in a resturant environment which is where most of our students will work once they complete the program. In addition to the new kitchen materials and food we use for the breakfast program we were able to purchase reward incentives that we used to make a classroom store for them to shop in. This was a wonderful addition to our classroom because I was then able to set up a paycheck system where each student got "paid' and we practiced budgeting skills where they had to deduct rent and utilities and then they could save their money or "purchase" something from our class store. The students really enjoyed this added addition. The kitchen materials will continue to be used as we gain new students each year. Thank you again for thinking about our classroom and these wonderful students!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of the grant is to fund our Autism Transition student based enterprise program that helps teach our students about responsibility, teamwork, life skills and vocational skills through a real life experience.

What will be done with my students

At our school my students operate a food program from our classroom where we shop, cook and sell food to our school staff members. Students take the orders and then prepare and deliver the food. Students then earn a "paycheck" at the end of each week and will be responsible for ""paying bills" and budgeting themselves money to go shopping in our classroom store as a reward. This program gives my students real life experiences that they otherwise would be unable to obtain due to some of their limitations. In our environment we are able to find a way for every student to participate to learn certain skills that they then will be able to put to use after our program in a "typical" job environment and/or their everyday life.

Benefits to my students

Our students benefit from the grant because it will allow them to practice valuable skills that will help them later on once they graduate from our program. The hope is that they learn the skills necessary to perform job duties in a typical restaurant environment where most of our students get employed as well as helping them in their everyday lives to become more independent.

Budget Narrative

The money will go to purchasing new kitchen supplies in order to make the cooking program successful as well as the start up food costs. In addition we will use the money to purchase the disposable items we use which includes gloves, hairnets, plastic ware, Styrofoam containers and cups. Lastly the money will go to buying items the students can "buy" in our class store with their "paycheck earnings". Items in the store will be things that the students are interested in such as headphones, speakers, art kits, snack items and apparel.
