I want to not only foster engaging Literacy Centers, but ones that will keep my students' eyes on text while learning essential tools for their reading and writing proficiency. Literacy Centers take place independently while the teacher works with a small group of students for Guided Reading. Guided Reading is the most crucial part of the Literacy Center reading block; it is vital that the remainder of the class is actively engaged in productive and engaging learning activities so the teacher may focus on the small group setting for intensive reading instruction. There are four rotations of 15 minutes each with one of those rotations being teacher directed reading instruction each day.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

Through the funding of this grant my students received both differentated Literacy Centers and task cards to accompany their learning.

My students were able to write their responses and work cooperativly with their peers while learning the essential fundamentals for grammar, comprehension, fluency, word study and writing. My students were fully engaged during our Literacy block having fun and internalizing critical skills for their success in second grade and beyond.

The assesments and recording of my students learning helped me to guide my instruction and further differentiate when needed. This kit along with the task cards has been a wonderful learning tool this year and one that intend to use for years to come with each new group of second graders.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I want to not only foster engaging Literacy Centers, but ones that will keep my students' eyes on text while learning essential tools for their reading and writing proficiency. Literacy Centers take place independently while the teacher works with a small group of students for Guided Reading. Guided Reading is the most crucial part of the Literacy Center reading block; it is vital that the remainder of the class is actively engaged in productive and engaging learning activities so the teacher may focus on the small group setting for intensive reading instruction. There are four rotations of 15 minutes each with one of those rotations being teacher directed reading instruction each day.

What will be done with my students

With the funding of this grant, my students will be working independently with an essential curriculum standards-based Literacy Center. The Literacy Center bundle that I chose will develop strengths in reading literature and informational text, writing, language, speaking and listening to strengthen their foundational skills. This comprehensive Literacy Center kit has task cards with word cards, picture cards and student activity sheets. Also included is a CD and teaching guide including model mini-lessons to introduce center tasks and routines, which is a must for student comprehension of their assigned Literacy Center task for optimum learning and internalization of skills.

Benefits to my students

Through this differentiated Literacy Center kit my students will be able to work independently and reap the benefits of developing their strengths in reading literature and informational text, writing, language, speaking and listening to internalize these important foundational skills which will prepare them and help them to become proficient and to be competitive as a 21st century learner. Additionally, while my students are becoming skillful in fundamental standard-based skills, I will be able to be more focused on my rotation of guided intensive reading to enable all students to be successful in second grade and beyond.
