Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 500

Our students are absolutley loving our Makerspace area in our library.  The makerspace area is now filled with a variety of materials that allow the children to create, invent work together and learn.  The children are able to gather with their classmates and explore using their imaginations.    This informal, playful area encourages the students to design, experiment, build, and invents as they engage in science and engineering.

It allows our children to expand their minds and creativity.  It is a way for students with all different abilities and learning styles to experiment, try, learn and create at thier own pace and to problem-solves as they go along.  There are so many benefits.  Not all individuals are able to learn from books.  We need to provide thise hands on opportunities for student to tinker and explore.

Our school is also a Title one school and much of our population is on free and reduced lunch.  There are so many students that wouln't access to these types of supplies at homeor have the financial means to purchase them. Having the resources available in the makerspace area allows students to display their creativity.

Students may come down in small groups to use the area or their teacher may being them for a specific lesson/reward.  The children also get to use the materials once a month during library time.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I am the brand new media specialist at Shadowlawn Elementary. My goal is to update our outdated library. I would like to add a Makerspce area to the media center,

What will be done with my students

The students will be given opportunities to gather, to create, invent, and learn using a variety of materials. They will use things that they are curious about and materials that spring from their imagination. Things that inspire them and things that they admire will be available for use. The informal, playful atmosphere allows learning to unfold, rather than conform to a rigid agenda. Making, rather than consuming is the focus. It is craft, engineering, technology and wonder-driven.

Benefits to my students

Adding a Makerspace area will provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering and tinkering. Makerspaces allow students to design projects and follow the direction of their individual interests. Providing an inviting space for students to explore new and sometimes intimidating technologies allows students to feel comfortable asking questions that will expose them to new ways of thinking.

Budget Narrative

All of these items will be ordered from Amazon and will get our Makerspace in the media center started. All of the children from PreK-5th grade will have the opportunities to participate in the Makerspace
