Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 17

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens was a tremendous asset to our emotional / behavior disorder students.   The activities prompted deep thought about one's actions that lead to success or failure.  The scenarios presented in the book opened the door to numerous discussions that allowed students to bring out emotions that they otherwise would not have shared with the group.  Information shared provided staff with a new outlook on how to more effectively work with the individual students.  In doing so, we have had very few behavior referrals and incidents where the students need to be removed from the class.

Overall, the project was highly successful.  Even now, weeks after completing the book, students and staff still use learned information such as, "If you do that, will that be a 'win/win situation or a win/lose situation'".

What will be done with my students

In this multi-day lesson, students will become familiar with The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. In addition to taking ownership of the habits by tracking their own Personal Bank Account, students will work collaboratively to conduct brief research and create a presentation on one of the habits. After sharing their multimedia presentations with the class, students will determine which one is most important to them personally. Students will write a response to explain how that habit can provide a positive personal impact.

Benefits to my students

These learning materials will be used with the students in our EBD (emotional/behavior disorder) unit. These are students who may have the capability to be highly successful academically, but typically experience low grades due to their inability to control their emotions and behavior. This book and workbook will assist students in being self-aware of their actions as well as teach them how to cooperate and collaborate with their peers. Being able to coexist with as well as aligning their behavior with the general education students will lead to greater academic success in all classes.
This book is listed as a standard and resource in CPALMS where numerous related resources are available to supplement the book.

Eighteen copies of the book and workbook will be purchased.
