When given the opportunity to collaborate with a “movement” class, I was inspired by the focus and engagement that was happening in this classroom. I was also encouraged by the difference it had on my students and their focus. “We Need to Move It, Move it to Learn it, Learn it!” is all about keeping the students moving and engaged in the classroom. My goal is to turn my ESE clustered classroom into an active learning zone by purchasing an assortment of equipment from www.moving-minds.com and www.amazon.com. I would like to elevate the student’s level of activity inside the classroom setting with the anticipation to increase their academic performance level across all the subject areas. A recent article indicates that children who are more active demonstrate better focus, faster cognitive processing, and more successful memory retention than kids who spend the day sitting still.
Students are individuals and they have different learning styles. There are students that struggle with a “traditional class” setting and their academics suffer because of that. Sitting in a desk all day is not beneficial for all students. Having this classroom, user-friendly equipment offers different options for the active students to be more at ease and be ready to learn.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 25

The "We Need to Move It, Move it to Learn it, Learn it" impacted about 25 students at Laurel Oak Elementary.  The response to the equipment was amazing! My students were beyond thrilled to use the different pieces. I created a rotation system that when the students came in the classroom each morning, they knew which piece of equipment that had for the day;  this gave them the opportunity to use a different seat each day. Each student came in excited to see which seat they were using for the day.  I also created rules for the students, if they were not using each piece appropriately then they had to use a regular chair for the remainder of the day.  They have taken cared of each piece really well.

I noticed a change in participation and student engagement right from the start of using the equipment.  Along with the new seats, I was able to purchase clipboards and small whiteboards so that each student could become mobile and the seating truly became flexible.  They were able to sit anywhere with their stools and writing equipment to complete independent work.  The students' stamina for the independent work increased as well.  My restless students were able to sit still and particpate in whole group instruction and activities, this is huge for my students.

When other students were sent to my room for different reasons, they were also able to use the different pieces of equipment.  These students showed focus and attention while using the equipment.

I am extremely grateful to Champions for Learning, the Education Foundation, and Florida License for Learning Plate Fund for supporting and funding my grant!  Thank you!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

My students will be encouraged to move throughout the day instead of being told to, “Stay in your seat!”. Students will be familiarized with the different pieces of equipment and urged to use them respectfully through the day. My expectations will be taught on how to use them appropriately to prevent distractions to other students in the classroom. These pieces were chosen after looking at many different possibilities.
The “Swidget Duo” is for the students that have fidgety legs and feet. These students tend to have lots of movement that can be distracting to others around them. Those students can also accidently kick their classmate from the fidgety legs. The “Swidget Duo” will allow the student to sit and move their legs and feet and the same time without the fear of hitting their classmate.
The “Elephant Z-Stool” would provide an alternative sitting option for students, desks could be raised to accommodate the stool height and students would be able to comfortably rest their feet on the foot rest. The “Elephant Z-Stools” are designed to help with proper posture and will allow the student to sit with his/her feet up. Proper posture helps with circulation and focus. These stools will be beneficial for the students that like to slouch down in the chair.

The “TiltED Active seats” are for kids that like to rock and swivel in their seats. This active seat changes that by allowing students to rock back and forth or rotate 90° in either direction to tilt side to side. Balancing the seat on the domed portion of its bottom edge lets students work their core muscles in new ways without disrupting class. These “TiltED Active Seats” will be perfect for them.
The “Kore Wobble Chairs” are for the students who never seem to be comfortable in a conventional chair. These students seem to on occasion to squat in the chair or lean back in the chairs, too. There is always the danger of falling and often does happen. The “Kore Wobble Chair” would them to move and sit at the same time without having the fear of hurting themselves.
The “Fidget Bands” are for the students that have anxiety or are fidgety at school. The “Fidget Bands” will reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm. For those with restless legs, anxiety or just plain nervous energy, having an outlet promotes a sense of calm and enhances the ability to focus. The fidget bands are perfect for releasing nervous energy! They allow students to get the movement they need while staying seated. They help reduce anxiety and nervousness and help students focus on their work.

Benefits to my students

Students benefit from movement when their bodies are active and alert. The more they are permitted to move, the more likely they will receive and retain new information. Purchasing this equipment would allow active students to be more physically active in school while having fun as they learn in the classroom. Students who struggle with focusing during lessons will be able to use the equipment that would help improve concentration which in turn should lead to greater success in all academic areas.

Budget Narrative

The equipment necessary for this proposal can be purchased through a website that is geared towards the goal of this proposal, www.moving-minds.com and also at www.amazon.com. Reviewing all the products available, the products that were chosen were the most relevant and budget friendly choices with the goal in mind.
