As a first-grade teacher, I know first-hand that entertaining books are key to a students’ love and
enjoyment of reading, and what comes from that—confidence in reading comprehension. To aid in this
process, and to introduce new teaching tactics into my classroom, I aim to play the books on tape and
allow the students to follow along as they listen. This new media will bring great joy to the students and
provide a calm, low-stress environment in the classroom.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

The Listen Up grant is such a fabulous addition to my 1st grade classroom.  I have been able to see the impact on my 18 students on a daily basis. The students are assigned a different story on tape each week. With my grant I was able to purchase 6 headphones that can be attached to my cd player.

As 6 students are able to participate at the same time, it greatly helps with my reading rotations. My students have the opportunity to hear the story being read out loud and read along with the print.  This promotes reading comprehension skills and word to print concepts.

My students filled out a Listen to Reading assignment while they were listening to the story. They write the Book title and they illustrate their favorite part of the story.

I was also able to start a book on CD library and store my new books set neatly and with pride. The grant not only funded 10 books with CD’s but also a pocket chart for keeping my new books/cds cleaned and organized.

As a 1st grade teacher I am always looking for fun and engaging ways to help my students find their love for reading. This grant was such a great way to hook students that need a visual and auditory example of different types of books. My students also gained a sense of independence with the CD player and listening to the story on their own. My students are more engaged with reading rotations.

Being a teacher is very fulfilling career however funding sometimes falls short for materials and supplies for the classroom. I am very grateful for Champions for Learning for funding this important and very helpful reading tool.

Thank you once again for sponsoring this very worthwhile program   I was and am very proud to have been chosen for funding.  My students have greatly benefited.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

As a first-grade teacher, I know first-hand that entertaining books are key to a students’ love and
enjoyment of reading, and what comes from that—confidence in reading comprehension. To aid in this
process, and to introduce new teaching tactics into my classroom, I aim to play the books on tape and
allow the students to follow along as they listen. This new media will bring great joy to the students and
provide a calm, low-stress environment in the classroom.

What will be done with my students

In the Listening Center, students will learn new rules and expectations, such as how to maintain proper
noise levels, clean-up procedures, how to take turns and independent problem solving. The audio books
will reinforce the learning target and genre from our CORE reading each week. The students will then
complete a graphic organizer to help reinforce the main idea, characters and setting of the story.

Benefits to my students

My students will benefit greatly from a listening center and new books on CD. They will have exposure to a variety of story structures. Foster independence with exposure to higher level text. I can build their vocabulary and offer different genres. The students can then hear poetry, plays and book pairs that follow our curriculum. Listening centers are also very beneficial for ELLs, they are more likely to understand a story if the story is repeated. The listening center will help students decode unfamiliar words, and introduce students to books about their reading level.
