Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

The impact of this grant on my students is amazing! My students became aware of their own fitness levels by wearing the Kid Power Bands - comparing the number of steps they had in one class to the next. They challenged themselves and each other to beat the number of steps each class. My students became aware of kids in other parts of the world who are malnourished - I showed video clips at the start of each PE class from UNICEF Kids Power YouTube channel, to teach them about World Hunger. I also shared emails that I received as the TBE UNICEF Kids Power Team Coach that contained specific children and their stories of how UNICEF Clinics helped them get back to a healthy state. My students learned empathy for the children that UNICEF helped, and gained a new perspective on their own power - Kid Power - to contribute to the well-being of others around the world. My students unified as a school team and began keeping track of which classes had accomplished the MOST steps. They far surpassed the goal I challenged them to: break the million-step mark AND provide over 100 meals to hungry kids. There is still a month of school left, and my students are nearing the 2 million-step mark, and are well over donating 100 meals. My principal gave me a hallway bulletin board to use to change each week to show steps for the PE day, total school steps, meals donated, and pictures of UNICEF kids and our own Kid Power kids.

Also, I share the UNICEF Kid Power Bands with another teacher at my school. Second grade teacher, Katie Bush, tried to get FitBit bands for her students but was unsuccessful. When I realized this, I offered to share the UNICEF Kid Power Bands with them, since I only teach PE on 1 day a week- Fridays. Her second grade students wear them on M-Th. She has developed a variety of Math activities that they do with the step counts, in addition to all of the personal and global health benefits of these bands. As these are not consumable, we plan on continuing to use them next year, empowering MORE of our own students at our school, and feeding more hungry kids around the world.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goals for this project are:
1. Health and Nutrition: Learn healthy exercise and nutrition habits.
2. Tech + PE: Learn how technology can improve our health and fitness.
3. Social Skills - Empathy, perspective
4. Learn to see a global perspective.
5. Learn that one person's actions can affect the lives of others.
6. Contribute to the good of mankind through everyday activities.
7. Social Studies: Learn about world geography and cultures, such as Haiti, Mozambique, and Uganda to name a few that are involved in the UNICEF Kid Power Bands missions.
8. Empowerment: “Kid Power” Learn that they can make a difference in someone’s survival in life through simple wearable technology.
9. Collaboration/Team Effort: each day’s classes will work together to record steps on the Kid Power Bands, thus earning Kid Power Points, and food for malnourished children.

What will be done with my students

My Friday Intermediate (grades 3-4-5) PE Classes and I will choose a Mission from the UNICEF Kid Power website. Each mission has a spokesperson, often a famous athlete the kids recognize, who introduces the country in which UNICEF is working to feed malnourished children. Through this Mission introduction, my students will learn about geography and culture of the location in that mission. There are many missions from which to choose, thus providing my students with challenges and learning throughout the year.

Each Friday in my PE classes in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grades, each student will wear a UNICEF Kid Power Band throughout our PE class activities, which include: warm-up, lesson, lesson activity, and cool down. Upon completion of all of the day’s PE classes, the day’s activity steps and earned Kid Power Points, my PE students and I will download the step count data from the Bands into the free UNICEF Kid Power Band app to my teacher iPad. For every 2, 500 activity steps recorded on the Kid Power Bands, one Power Point is earned. For every 5 Power Points earned, Ready To Use Therapeutic Food Packets (RUTF) are unlocked. These RUTFs are donated and distributed by UNICEF to severely malnourished children in the location my students learned about in the Mission Introduction.

Benefits to my students

This project benefits my students to help them...
1. Learn healthy fitness activities and good nutrition.
2. Learn to help others in need.
3. Learn to use technology to track and improve individual health.
4. Learn about geography and cultures.
5. Learn that one person can impact the world for good.
6. Learn to work together with others.

Budget Narrative

I would like 30 of the UNICEF Kid Power Bands because my class numbers for PE grade 3-4-5 are between 26-30. So I would be purchasing a class bundle of 10 ($399.99) and a class bundle of 20 Kid Power Bands ($599.99). The Kid Power Bands come with a USB rechargeable cord. The three Sabrent 10-port USB Rapid Charger would provide me with the necessary equipment to charge all 30 Kid Power Bands at once so they’re ready for my students.

Items

# Item Cost
1 UNICEF Kid Power Bands (Quantity 30) $998.00
2 Sabrent 10-Port USB Rapid Charger (Quantity 3 at $27.99 each) $83.97
