Let's build our vocabulary. More than one quarter of our students are identified as below level in vocabulary according to our instructional data collection tools. While we plan to make vocabulary a focus all year, we hope to put word collecting in the spotlight during Literacy Week in February.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 577

This year, our entire school was able to embark on a vocabulary expedition! Vivid vocabulary has been shared throughout our school year. The highlight of our year was our Literacy Week and Literacy Night which revolved around vocabulary activities with a dino-mite theme. Students and family members dressed up as paleontologists and learned how to excavate the earth to unveil unknown classifications of extinct species. Students were delighted to find dinosaur eggs and vocabulary words throughout our campus during their scavenger hunt to find clues. As families worked together to gather words, they were all lead back to the Vocabulary Volcano which held all of the answers they needed. The parent involvement was key as they were able to help reinforce our vocabulary work both during the event and at home. The week was full of events that inspired literacy and brought great joy to students and teachers alike. We are so grateful for the generosity of Suncoast Credit Union for making this vocabulary quest possible. We look forward to reflecting on our end of year results and the boost we predict it will have on our students’ vocabulary domain.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Let's build our vocabulary. More than one quarter of our students are identified as below level in vocabulary according to our instructional data collection tools. While we plan to make vocabulary a focus all year, we hope to put word collecting in the spotlight during Literacy Week in February.

What will be done with my students

Our students will be engaged in a week long pep rally revolving around VOCABULARY. We will celebrate with a Vocabulary Parade Day which students will dress up as vocabulary words and we will play vocabulary games with our families on literacy night. The highlight of the night will be when families work together to CREATE an artistic representation of their chosen vocabulary word. Teachers and staff will act as walking thesauruses & dictionaries to ensure all vocabulary questions are answered. Together we will create a vocabulary masterpiece which will be hung in our cafeteria and hallways to raise our vocabulary ceiling.

Benefits to my students

According to our iReady Data of our 2017-18 school year, the Vocabulary Domain was our weakest area. 27% of our students are below level in vocabulary and 4% of those students are two levels below. With a teamwork approach of getting all students, families and staff involved, we hope to deepen the vocabulary knowledge of all of our students and improve our proficiency results.
