Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 70

International Cafe hosted 70 students this year. We had several students both join us and leave us throughout the school year. Some countries represented were Guatemala, Columbia, Venezuela, Chile, Haiti, Germany, Russia, Switzerland and Nicaragua. International Cafe's goal is to have students create connections with other students who are also new to the country and to help them assimilate to the US. It is through social interaction that we can  give them a voice and to let them know they are important to us here at Calusa Park. We had several topics this year some of which were: School Procedures, Bilingual Community Member visit, History of Thanksgiving/What are you thankful for? and Goal Setting.

Teachers have said  that they notice their students feeling more confident, they are wiling to participate more often and many students have made new friends.

I asked the International Cafe students to write a review of the program. Some responses I received were " I loved the talks we had about keeping focused so we can have a career", "I loved meeting new people from other countries", "I was happy to be able to speak to someone in Spanish" and my favorite "I loved trying all the snacks like Goldfish"

Thank you for providing us with the funds so that International Cafe may continue providing support through various activities as they assimilate to our community.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of New Country, New Customs: Foreign to Familiar is to continue hosting an International Café. The International Café’s goal is to support our students in assimilating to the United States of America, while recognizing the culture and language they bring with them. They will also have the opportunity to make friends with other students that are learning English as well.

What will be done with my students

The English language learning students attending the International Café will enjoy a morning snack while enjoying the company of new friends to start the day on a positive note. While in the Café, each student will acquire a sense of community and connection through a variety of monthly activities that will focus on topics pertinent to their new situation. In August, we reviewed procedures that were unfamiliar such as the fire alarm, a lockdown drill and expectations at our school. Future activities will include various topics and modalities. One activity will be finding each other’s country on maps. Then they will draw or write about the country they left and create a collage representing what they love about the United States. In December, the Café will include a discussion about different holidays and how they celebrate them. Students will get to experience new technology by creating Flipgrid videos as they respond to questions. They will be guided to generate a plan for their future dreams after speaking to community members about their own cultural journey and the benefits of being bilingual. Finally, students will reflect upon the year’s achievements.

Benefits to my students

Students participating in the International Café will acquire new acquaintances throughout the school. They will become familiar with their new school and new experiences. They will acquire new knowledge and assimilate to their new surroundings. Through the months, students will have a safe environment to voice their concerns, their sadness, their excitement, and their new knowledge. These activities will allow the students to open their minds to a vast array of new opportunities available to them in their new country, the United States of America. Students, as well as our International Café ambassadors (older students who were English Language Learners in the past), will form a more accepting mindset, as well as form connections with others. When participating in the Café, students will gain a sense of security and confidence as they experience their new school. This security and confidence are necessities to learn and be successful in school.

Budget Narrative

This grant will allow over 75 English Language Learners to become comfortable in their new country with the new customs they will learn. What is now foreign will become familiar! Thank you for consideration for funding my grant.
