As a 3rd and 4th grade ESE Inclusion teacher my goal is to use vocabulary games to engage and motivate my students in a small group setting. Vocabulary is very important to reading comprehension. Students cannot understand what they are reading without knowing what most of the words mean. I will use these games to help my students practice more skills related to vocabulary such as prefixes, root words and suffixes. These changes can affect the meaning of words and students need guidance to understand why this happens.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 60

My Vocabulary Mania grant provided reading intervention for my student’s with poor vocabulary skills. The games helped my students to better understand grade level vocabulary. My students were engaged through these hands on games that let them be detectives while using context clues related to vocabulary that included the use of pre-fixes/ suffixes and homophones just to name a few. I am so proud of the way that my students used these skills in their writing. As they were proof reading their writing, I was glad to see them remembering our practices of synonyms and antonyms in our games and seeing them utilizing those words to make their writing "pop"! It was also wonderful to watch them read and notice words that had multiple meanings and be able to distinguish what the word meant while reading different articles and books. The best part of all, was coming into their classroom and them asking me enthusiastically if they could play our detective vocabulary games. Now that is a win-win for me. My students want to read thanks to my grant and your help in funding it.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

As a 3rd and 4th grade ESE Inclusion teacher my goal is to use vocabulary games to engage and motivate my students in a small group setting. Vocabulary is very important to reading comprehension. Students cannot understand what they are reading without knowing what most of the words mean. I will use these games to help my students practice more skills related to vocabulary such as prefixes, root words and suffixes. These changes can affect the meaning of words and students need guidance to understand why this happens.

What will be done with my students

To help my students gain a better understanding of difficult vocabulary, I will provide an intervention in small group settings within their classroom. I will use these vocabulary games as a reinforcement to engage my students with their curriculum content that is aligned with their learning goals.

Benefits to my students

These vocabulary games will benefit my students academically by helping them communicate their ideas and expressing themselves in their writing as well as their reading comprehension. Having word knowledge will help my students comprehend texts used in the classroom as well as State tests. Vocabulary is the foundation for comprehension. Using interactive games will provide an incentive and stimulus for my students to understand vocabulary words.

Budget Narrative

These two vocabulary games will be ordered from Educational Insights and Lake Shore Learning. I have included an estimated amount for shipping and handling.
