Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 33

Our Immokalee Students had an excellent time at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. All of the students were excited to get the oppurtunity to go since they had never been before. Once we arrived to the Conservancy, we were greeted by the nicest Naturalist ready to teach our students for the day. One of the most rewarding parts of the day was watching my students interact with the Discovery Center. Students got to handle snails and touch horseshoe crabs for the first time. My students loved seeing the sea turtle, Nin, and exploring the different ecosystem stations. I loved seeing the students fully engaged in science and watching them learn in a totally new way. We had extra money with the grant and was able to provide lunch as well for the students and chaperones which is an additional bonus to the original outcomes of the trip. Many students at the end of the trip expressed a desire to possibly pursue a career in science! That makes me so excited as a science teacher! Overall, I am so thankful for Champions for Learning and for the blessing that was given to give students a trip that they will always remember.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this field trip is to immerse students in a real-world environment and exposing the students to their natural environment. The goal is to provide students with a unique connection to the curriculum they are learning by taking them out of the classroom and into nature to get a hands-on, relatable experience.

What will be done with my students

During the field trip, students will be able to not only learn but also practice science. This field trip allows students to collect aquatic species for identification, use instruments to evaluate water quality, and engage in scientific inquiry in the Conservancy STEM Lab. They are also able to explore the Dalton Discovery Center and get up close encounters with fish, turtles, alligators etc. (Conservancy of SWFL, 2018).

Benefits to my students

The benefit of outdoor learning environments has great impacts on students and their ability to not only learn information but to connect to it. Overall, there has been a decline in the number of children who experience nature first-hand in modern times (Campen, 2012; House of Commons). This field trip benefits student living in an area with little to no access to experience their natural world around in both an educational and structured form.
