Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 23

With this grant, twenty-three students were given the opportunity to read all fifteen 2019 Sunshine State Young Reader Award books.  The third graders were eager to get their hands on the books and couldn’t wait for me to order them!  They had the opportunity to utilizes in the classroom as well as to check out and read with their families at home.  Each student was given a bookmark to place on a classroom bulletin board with each title.  When they read and passed a comprehension quiz, confirming their understanding of the text, they colored their bookmark in.  They were filled with pride each time they finished a book and moved on to another one.  It was enlightening to hear them share their book review with others and encourage them to read the SSYRA books.  With reading three or more SSYRA books, students will get to vote on their favorite in May.   Twelve students achieved this goal.  Three students read all fifteen SSYRA books and will get to take a lime ride with the principal to go to lunch. Thank you for starting students on their journey to becoming lifelong readers.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to motivate third grade students to read all 15 Sunshine State Young Readers books. This project will encourage stamina building in reading and promote activities that involve reading, speaking, listening, and writing.

What will be done with my students

Students will have the opportunity to read all 15 SSYRA books. In order to complete a book, the students need to take a Reading Counts test for that book. They will track their progress with their Reading Counts Tracker, to achieve their goal. Once they have read 5, they will get a chance to share a book review with the class in order to persuade others to read that book. This encompasses the opportunity for students to practice persuasive and debating skills to encourage peers to become excited about various types of literature.

Benefits to my students

This project will motivate students to explore various types of literature. Most students tend to chose the same types of books and this will expand their understandings of different genres and build a passion for reading. This also gives the students a challenge of reading highly complex texts much like they will see on the FSA (Florida Standards Assessment). With being a title 1 school, most students do not have access to newly published literature. This would give those students a chance to become excited and build love of reading. As a special benefit, all students reading the complete set of 15 SSYRA books, will be taken on a field trip in a limo to Barnes and Noble.
