Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

The Prime Climb game is a great way to help students understand how the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplicaiton, and division can change numbers. Students in 5th grade not only use these operations but apply them to fractions, decimals, and other real-world problems. Students had a great time playing Prime Climb, and all the while what they were really doing was sharpening their math and critical thinking skills. The game is very open-ended, and allows for a ton of decision-making. Strategy and decision-making is not something students do on a regular basis, so having the time to do practice and apply the skills to math was huge! Students also get sheer enthusiasm out of getting to play board games at school because it is a rare occurrence these days. Thank you for providing a truly fun learning experience for these kids!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will become more fluent with all four operations by choosing which operation will help them the most during their turn. They will also work on the standard of order of operations as they track the operations they have used in each turn.

What will be done with my students

Students in 5th grade will be introduced to the game by the math coach during intervention time and to the teachers during planning time. Students will use the game during intervention time and during targeted lessons in class to practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills.

Benefits to my students

Students will get practice with multiple operations in math and most importantly with critical thinking skills. They have to analyze the possible moves and decide which will benefit them the most. This will directly link to students having to decide which operation to do when faced with world problems.

Budget Narrative

Seven games will be purchased so each of our 5th grade teachers has a game to use with their students once they have been trained.
