Oftentimes students believe that those who have achieved greatness, have achieved it because they were lucky. They believe that they happened upon their circumstances and had the right situation, rather than understanding that great change has been made and enabled by ordinary people who have worked diligently and passionately on something they believe in. Through reading, I am Malala, students will not only have the opportunity to read a true story about someone their age who changed the world and came from no more extraordinary means than their own. It is intended that they will increase their understanding of the world around them, gain a better appreciation for their own education, and practice applying their skills learned inside the classroom to the world outside.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 67

This year, for our second classroom novel we read I am Malala together. This novel went along with our sixth unit, Guided by a Cause, and allowed students to learn about someone around their age who was working to change the world. Students were able to learn about Malala's work through her memoir and conducted extension projects, where they researched organizations dedicated to promoting girls' education aroud the world, and in the US. Additionally, students were able to learn about Pakistani culture and customs from reading about how Malala's childhood is similar and different to their own.

Reading a memoir was especially useful as this is a style of writing we studied extensively thoughout the year. Students had to write their own one page memoirs during the year and then learn and read other memoirs in their curriculum during the year. Reading I am Malala allowed them the opportunity to read a full-length memoir and review another types of writing.

The audio, in conjuction with the novels, was very helpful in allowing the memoir to become even more real for students. It was beneficial for them to hear some of the words foreign to them, properly pronounced and fluently read aloud to them. This is necessary in increasing their own fluency and comprehension.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Oftentimes students believe that those who have achieved greatness, have achieved it because they were lucky. They believe that they happened upon their circumstances and had the right situation, rather than understanding that great change has been made and enabled by ordinary people who have worked diligently and passionately on something they believe in. Through reading, I am Malala, students will not only have the opportunity to read a true story about someone their age who changed the world and came from no more extraordinary means than their own. It is intended that they will increase their understanding of the world around them, gain a better appreciation for their own education, and practice applying their skills learned inside the classroom to the world outside.

What will be done with my students

Students will read and analyze I am Malala. Students will engage in literature circles and analyze the actions Malala Yousafzai undertook to advocate on behalf of women’s education in Pakistan and how she continues her work today from the United Kingdom. Additionally, students will participate a research project based on the curriculum of I am Malala and the documentary, He Named Me Malala.

Benefits to my students

In the seventh grade curriculum, the sixth collection is called Guided by a Cause. This novel pairs very well with the themes of this collection and will act as a supplemental learning opportunity for students to engage with a reading outside of their textbook. Additionally, this will allow students the opportunity to engage with a different type of novel, a memoir, and expose them to another culture and an understanding of how an advocate began her journey.

Budget Narrative

I budgeted enough novels for a class set and then included an audible version of the novel so students can listen to the novel as we read it together in class.
